The Canadian Pacific Steamers.

The three fine new steamers that were built en the Clyde for the Canadiao Pacific Railway Company, having been passer d up throug h the canals in safety, are now at Port Colborne, where the work of fit'ing them up for passenge! service on the. lakesis being proceeded

with. I[Itwiil be rem? wm bered that it was necessary to cut each of them into two sections to pass them throug rh the lo:ks of the canals, but they have now been ré anites iin accordance with the original plans. Forsome time passed the woodwork for their cabins has beeo in course of preparation at the Canadian Pacific car and it is now about to be forwarded to Port Colborne, where the cabins will be built. Tb

three steamers,the Alberta, Algoma and Arthabasca, are each 270 loag, 38 feet wide and 23 feet deep. The cabins, which willbe on the spar deck, will extend toa length of 240 feet with a width of 30, leaving a passage way four feet wide between the cabins and the rail of the vessel. The forward part will beadining saloonand there will be 60 staterooms. There will be in ull 180 separate berths for passengers, and by the addition of sofas 250 first-class passengers can easily be accommodated. The whole of the main deck can be utilized for steerage passengers, and 1,000 can be accommodated if necessary. These steamers can also carry 2,000 tons of freight each. As soonas navigation opens in the spring they will be put on the line from Algoma to Port Arthur,

and the time from Montreal to Winnipeg will be reduced to about 65 hours or fess. The distances are as fullows:—

At 76 years and over one can be said to have the beauty only of age, strik- ing as thatisin Mr. Whittier’s case with the dark eye and full beard, where black lines still appear among the sil- ver, while his form is as straight and his step is as firm and elastic as ever. But the poet’s youthful beauty is reported to have been extraordinary; very tall erect, and well knit, with fine features, dark skin, an a flashing, deep-set bla k eye, he could not have looked the Quaker to any extent; and in fact we think he is more of a Quaker in habit and affection than anything else. He has himself recognized that

and even though he clings to the forms of the sect in many respects, using the plein language generally, and tells somewhat why he prefers the silence of the meeting for worship rather than any solitude of wood or wild where

nature speaks tohim with a thousand hands, yet he dresses so nearly like men of the world in cut and colour that only practised eyes could detect the slight difference in the shape of his coat, and his feelings about such matters are en- tirely liberal. When his little niece wanted the scarlet cape that other chil- dren wore, and there was objection in the houseon account of the Quak r custom, Mr. Whittier insisted that she should be gratified, although, sooth to say poet as heis, he himself cannot tell red from green till sunlight falls upon it. Once, indeed, the library fire, of which he is so fond jhaviag damaged the border of the wall-paper, he matched the pat- tern and triumpantly replaced it befere detection, only to learn that he had sub- stituted for the green vine one of bright autumnal crimson. Yetso strong is the poet’s imagination that this defect of visiou is nowhere evident in his work, although one might gather there that while, as he says: his eye was beauty’s powerless slave,” yet light and shade please him more than variety and depth of hue.— Harper's Magazine.

A well-known clergyman io the north of England, entertained recently a brother, clergyman from some distance. The evening being unpropitious, he

The Rev. Z. P. Wilds, well-known city missionary in New York, and brother of the late eminent Judge Wilds, of the Massachusetis Supreme Court, writes as follows:
