The Short Line Claims. Puewasn, Aug. 18.

Judge Clarke, who arrived from Ottawa « few days ago, commenced this morning to consider the claims of the sub-contractors and others connected with the Short Line Railway. Yn opening the commission, Judge Clarke stated briefly the object of the commissien to be the equitable payment of the various claims to the extent per- mitted by the vote of $125,000 made by the Dominion Government at the late session of Parliament. Judge Clarke read a tele- gram from Ottawa, saying that money had been placed to bis credit as §6©>—sd Com missioner, and it would be payable in any Nova Scotia Banking Office on his check. The town is crowded with people interested in the commission; buildings are decked with bunting and the people are jubilant over the prospects of having their claims paid. The contractors are so far satisfied with Judge Clarke's de- cisions.

Poundmaker's Trial. Wiynirea, Aug. 18,

Chief Poundmaker’s trial was commenced yesterday morning. The indictment brought againsi him was for treason and felony. The counsel for the crown said that he would prove that Pound- maker was in command of the rebels at Cut Knife Creek and that he aszisted at the looting of Battleford; and also that he commanded. the attack on the teamsters at Eagle Hills. Several withesses were examined, including Robert Jetferzoo, the prisoner's son-in-law, and the court adjourned at 6 o’clock. The trial of Thomas Scott at Prince Albert, an alleged white rebel, has been postponed until September. He was ad- mitted to bail.

A Nuisance.

Sir,—Can you, or any of your readers, inform me whose duty it is to see that she Charlottetown public are protected against such nuisances as that now lying upon the shore below Government House grounds ! Twice before, this summer, have carcasses of dead animals been placed there, and there they have remained for days, if not weeks, to the great danger of the public health, and to the intense annoyance and discomfort of those who usually take this pleasant way to reach and return from the Park.
