MINUTES OF STUDENT COUNCIL January 30, 1983, at 4:00 pm
MEMBERS PRESENT: Margaret Archibald, Howard Beattie, Shari Bond, Darren Craswell, Anne Gillis, Gus Hillstrom, Lynn Hubley, Glenn Hynes, James Johnston, Heather Love, John MacDougall, Dave McFadyen, Victor Moore, Ronalda Murphy, Steven Thompson, Mike Trainer,
MEMBERS ABSENT: Clare MacAuley, Anne MacEwen, John ‘Q'Brien, Cathy Waite.
ORDER AND APPROVAL OF MINUTES Motion: Brennan/Craswell to approve minutes. Carried Unanimously. BUSINESS ARISING: Nil. STUDENT UNION ELECTIONS: In discussion of the Student Union elections it was pointed out that the con- stitutional distribution' of members per faculty is according to the propor— tion of students in the faculty. Because of this, there must be a redistri— bution of members per fac- ulty prior to this election. Also, discussed were the monies allotted by Student union to prospective members for campaign funds. Motion: McDougall/Brennan to increase these campaigne ‘ funds to $20 per executive candidate and $10 per regular council candidate, to be allotted on presentation of
receipts. For: 13, Opposed: 0, Abstentions: 4, Motion Carried.
The dates for nominatiois to be open were decided at the 7th to the 17th of February. The Constitution states that, the date of the election should be the last Wednesday of February. Unfortunately, this year that date falls in the middle of the March Break. The date has therefore been moved to Wednesday March 9. The candidates must be informed if the dis— crepancy, so as to prevent a post—election quarrell from an unhappy candidate as to the legality of the election.

that a quorum be sought for the day of the elections speeches.
Motion: Murphy/Thompson that a general meeting of the Student Unim be held the day of the ele- ctioans speeches. For: 14 quosed: 0, Abstmticns; 2 Motion Carried.
HIRING BOARD AND THE SELECTION BOARD: The hiring board and the selection board struck at the beginning of this year will be respmsible for further hiring and selection board duties this year.
STUDENT LIFE CCNFECRENCE: An upcoming at Mt. St. Vicent's University in Halifax on different as— pects of student life is to be attended by two 5 students from UPEI.

NATIONAL PROVINCIAL MEETING
This is a CFS conference to take place February 24—27 in Ottawa. Each province is to
send 2 representatives , whose
trips will be paid for by CFS and variousprovincial components. Move to open nominations. Margaret Archibald nominates Howard

There were mo committees with student vacancies: the promotioi criteria committee and the budget
committee.
Floor opened for non— inations for the promo- tional criteria coImittee. Gus Hillstrom nominated Margaret Archibald. Non inations ceased.
Floor opened for the nominations for the budget - committee. Gus Hillstrom nominated Jim Murtagh, John MacDougall nominates Glenn Hynes. In ensuing vote, Hynes was elected as the student representative.
The PEI School of Nursing approached the Student Union in order to utilize the Student Union Building for anKevent on a date that did not coif—lict withother Student Union activities.

Glenn Hynes pointed to council that neither they nor the students they . represent had been at— tending various Long Range Planning Committees meetings in their various faculties. As this is a very important subject it should be required that at least the council member attend. ,
