In 1993/4, the investments have been for the Macphail Woods Ecological Forestry Project ($10,000), the Island Nature Trust's Landowner Contact - Stewardship Program ($44,950), and the P.E.I. Eastern Habitat Joint Venture Wetland Stewardship Program ($41,650). The primary source of funds for the WHC is the sale of the Duck Stamp and Print. These can be obtained locally from the Island Nature Trust at 566-9150. © The New Brunswick Nature Trust has acquired its 5th nature preserve called Pickerel Pond through a donation by local cottage owners. The 78~hectare property on Maquapit Lake in Queens County is mostly lowland swamp but it also includes a shingle spit, and part of a keyhole lake. Unusual species include burr oak and swamp milkweed. (adapted from N.B. Naturalist, Vol. 20 Dec. 1993) Congratulations to the N.B. Federation of Naturalists on the opening of the Mary's Point Interpretive Centre in 1993. This site was purchased as part of the Shepody National Wildlife Area in 1978 and dedicated as a Western Hemispheric Shorebird Reserve as part of Wildlife ’87. The Federation’s first development project was to establish a parking Kg lot and trail to the beach and it then hired student wardens and interpreters. Increased visitation, 5,000 in 1993, led to the develop- ment of an interpretation centre over the past 3 years. (adapted from N.B. Naturalist, Vol. 20 Dec. 1993). The successes and failures of Piping Plover recovery initiatives were on the discussion table in Sackville on November 14th and 15th as Piping Plover Recovery Team members and representatives of a variety of groups working on the recovery plan met. The decline of the Piping Plover population in Atlantic Canada, despite all the efforts of the last decade, led to an evaluation of the techniques that have been used in this region. The U.S. Piping Plover Recovery Team has been very successful in their efforts perhaps in part due to the tougher laws and much more rigorous commitment of the various agencies involved. The work of Parks Canada in this region was particularly outstanding as was the work of certain beach guardians, in particular that of Neil and Sally Bennett on P.E.I. The Iles-de-la-Madeleine group’s success continues to be an encouragement to other groups working with Piping Plovers in this region.
