Rt. Rev. George A. MacDonald Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is sponsored by St. Dunstan’s University Board of Governors. It is valued at $1,000 and is to be awarded to a second or third year student from PEI attending UPEI. It will be based on above-average academic and athletic performance. Application forms are available at the Registrar’s Office or at Student Services. Deadline for application is March 1, 1996.

Looking for a job?

There are jobs to be had on campus for students if you know where to look. All students. jobs offered by the University, with a few exceptions (i.e. marker’s jobs handled by individual departments) are posted on the gopher. To access personnel information and job postings, as well as the status of closed jobs there are a few steps you can do.

1) Log on to a computer

2) Choose *‘Gopher’’ off the main menu

3) Select ‘‘Administration and Service Department’”’

4) Select ‘‘Personnel’’

Here you will find postings, info, policies etc. The name of the successful applicants will be listed on the Gopher file ‘Completed student jobs -- position(s) offered too’’. Student Services also has a billboard in its office for student jobs which are offered outside the University. The Student Union offers jobs, and they are posted in the student paper. Applica- tions are available in the Barn.

The Rotary Club of Charlottetown Bursary shall be awarded to international students enroled in full time studies at the University of Prince Edward Island. Academic achievement and financial need will be the selection criteria; therefore, students from developing countries will be of particular interest. Bursary application forms are available at the registrar’s Office. Application deadline is Tuesday, 31 October 1995.

The League of Canadian Poets invites all Canadians to participate in the nation’s biggest annual poetry competition. Prizes of $1,000, $750, and $500 will be awarded for the top three poems. The best 50 poems will be published in the anthology series Vintage 96. Poems must be unpublished, not to exceed 75 lines, typed, single-sided on plain white paper and numbered - - not stapled.

The contest is open to Canadian citizens and landed immigrants. The entrant’s name, address, and phone number should appear on a separate cover page. Entry fee is $6 per poem (cheque or money order payable to the League of Canadian Poets). Copyright remains with the poet and winners will be asked for one- time permission to publish their work in Vintage 96. Include SASE for information on the winners, entries will not be returned. Volunteers Needed

Writer researching loss of virginity. Serious written stories could be included in a book whose purpose is to help teens make a responsible life decision regarding sex. Focus will be on

1) Your age at the time

2) Are you male or female?

3) Did your culture have any influence on your experience?

4) Who was your partner? (How did you meet, how long did you know each other?)

5) Was it planned?

6) What influenced your decision?

7) What preceded the event?

8) Were there any immediate repercussions? (good, bad, indifferent) 9) How do you think it affected you life in retrospect?

Please write your story in your own words. This is not a questionnaire. All correspondence should include the writer's name, address and telephone number. Your name can be changed (for confidential- ity) upon request. Those who wish to remain anony- mous, (and are comfortable in doing so) please include a phone number in the event that the questions arise. Stories may be edited for purpose of clarity or length. Changes in Highway Traffic Act

I would like to bring to your attention some changes which have been made to the Highway Traffic Act in regards to an out of © province students’ motor vehicle registration and| driver’s licence. Out of province students who are enroled in University school or college in PEI will be allowed to operate their vehicle registered in their home jurisdiction.. As well, an

out of province student who is enroled in a

university, college or school in the province will be allowed to drive with a valid licence issued to him/her by another jurisdiction without exchang- ing for a PEI license within 120 days.

Concerns in these areas have been expressed by the students from the Atlantic region and exchange students. Further inquiries into driver licensing and vehicle registration may be directed to the Highway Safety Division at 368-5200.

The Business Society has been busy the last few weeks. We are full swing into our annual membership drive. We just passed the 200 member mark last Thursday and still expect many more. In the first week the frosh rep was elected. This year the honour belongs to Stephen Hann. Congratulations Stephen.

The golf tourney was held on Sept. 8 at Glen Afton. It was a breezy day but a few club swingers were not intimidated by the conditions. Steve Ferguson, Chris Irwin and Steve Penny were all in the mid 30s after 9 holes. There was nobody removed from the golf course this year, which should allow us to return to Glen Afton in future years, After golf everyone retired to the Barn where the players and caddies enjoyed a 2 for 1 special from Moosehead. Thanks to Moosehead, the Barn and Glen Afton for making the golf tourney a success

A harbour cruise was held on Sept 13 at Peakes Wharf Harbour Cruises. It was another success. There were three sailings and approximately 80 people -- a good turnout. There were a few minor setbacks. The film for the camera somehow fell overboard and was buried at sea and some people may have consumed too many liquids...

I would like to thanks our sponsor Moosehead Breweries for their generous support and Peakes Wharf Harbour Cruises for their cooperation and patience.

Last Friday we had a softball tournament, but ‘this was written before Friday because of the Thursday deadline. I am sure it was a riot. Moosehead is once again being generous beyond belief.

This Friday is the Pub Crawl. It is going to be a wild day-long event. If you wish to attend you must buy a T-shirt to get the special liquid prices across town. For business Society members it costs $12.00 and for non member it costs $20.00. You

Attention History Students.

There will be a meeting for the History Society on Wednesday October 4th at 4:30 in the History Lounge. All are welcome to attend as we will be discussing upcoming events. Be there, as no one bothered to show up for the first meeting. This may be your last chance.
