The Political Studies Society of UPEI

would like to invite all students and faculty to two guest speaker forums in the Political Studies Lounge Room Main 401. On Wednesday October 26, 2005 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., we will have Guardian political reporter Wayne Thibault speaking to us on Media and PEI politics. On Wednesday November 2, 2005 at 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. we have Robert Ghiz leader of the official opposition on PEI and leader of the provincial Liberal party at the lounge speaking on island politics and Canadian politics. All forums will have an open question and answer period. Any one interested is welcome to attend. High Commissioner of India to Speak at UPEI Oct. 26

The University of Prince Edward Island will be hosting the High Commissioner of India to Canada, Shyamala Balasubramanian Cowsik, for an evening presentation on October 26th. High Commissioner Cowsik will speak on “India-Canada: Partners of the 21st Century,” from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm in Lecture Theatre “C” in the Atlantic Veterinary College, UPEI. All are welcome. Before joining the Indian Foreign Service, High Commissioner Cowsik completed a Master’s degree in Physics. She was the first woman to top her nation’s list of successful candidates in the All India Civil Service examination. She has had diplomatic assignments in Geneva, Washington, Bangkok, Belgrade, the Philippines, and The Hague, and has been Joint Secretary/Head of Division at the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi. In 2004, she proceeded directly from The Hague to Ottawa, as the High Commissioner of India to Canada. This is the High Commissioner’s first visit to Prince Edward Island.

Carlos Reyes-Manzo, International Photojournalist, to Speak Oct. 28

The Children’s Health Applied Research Team (CHART) at the University of Prince Edward Island is hosting the world-renowned photojournalist, Carlos Reyes-Manzo during a week-long photo shoot on PEI. Mr. Reyes-Manzo will present and discuss his work on Friday, October 28, 1:30 to 3:00 pm in Lecture Room “A” in the Atlantic Veterinary College, UPEI. All are welcome.

GLOBAL CLIMATE CHANGE- REGIONAL ISSUES: Climate Change Action Speaker Nov 3 at UPEI

Michael Stoddard, deputy director of Environment Northeast (ENE) in Portland, Maine, will speak to region-wide strategies on climate change at a public presentation on Thursday, November 3rd, 7-9:30pm in room 120 Main Building at UPEI. He will also provide insights on possibilities for US-Canadian coalition building between east-coast NGOs, in preparation for the upcoming Kyoto Protocol Conference in Montreal Nov. 28-Dec. 9, COP11; as well as provide an update on climate change issues from the USA. This regional event to lead up to the COP11 Conference is co-sponsored by the Institute of Island Studies, the Environmental Coalition of PEI (ECOPE]), the Atlantic Canada Energy Coalition (ACEC) and Climate Action Network Canada (CAN Canada).
