The Montclair series. which made its debut last year in pioneering the low-silhouette. presents a four- door sport sedan. I striking two- door hardtop coupe and a glamor- ous convertible.

ln offering a choice of three high compression. overhead valve. Y-3 engines, Mercury has designed its power plants and its transmissions to complement each other. Dis- placement has been increased to 312 cubic inches. with a larger cylinder bore and a longer piston stroke. The combination of in- creased displacement. higher com- pression ratios. greater breathing ability and improved carburetion makes the Mercury' engines out- standing in performance and dep- endability.

A 12-volt electrical system pro- vides the additional voltage re- quired for the higher compression engines. thus improving starting under all weather conditions and assuring efficient and economical operation of the new ignition sys- tem at all times.

Acceleration is smoother and swifter with improvements in the Merc-0-Matic transmission. and the upshift from first to second gear is revised from 36 miles an hour to 41 miles an hour at wide open IIll'i)llIe. '

Dual exhausts are standard on all Montclair and Monierey models and on station wagon models. They are available on Custom models.

Restyied both inside and out, the 1956 Mercury has a finer texture in the upper portion of the grille and more massive bumper guards with a pronounced forward rake to emphasize the headlight thrust. A new hood ornament features a bright finish block "M" with a winged effect and a Mercury head in the center. A reduced version or the "M" hood ornament in gold with white background on the rear deck, and tail lights restyled with more chrome, emphasize the wide. low appearance from the rear.

The regular two-door and four- dnor sedans not only look lower, but are lower. Their overall height has been reduced by lowering the roof line without any loss of head room. Sweeping body side mould- ings add to the long. low appear- ance and set-the frame for a-whole series 'of attractive new "flo-tone" color combinations.

Door panels. quarter panels and seats have been re-styled with new, richer fabrics, including woven plastic. vinyl and cloth materials. Patterns and combinations range from conservative to ultra-modern. all selected to blend with the ex- terior body colors and interior trim schemes.

For greater safety in case of accident, all Mercurys have s new impact-absorbing steeidpg wheel with the hub or steeri g column depressed six inches. he wheel and its three spokes are designed to absorb. the force of the impact. as the spokes bend without break-
