SOUTH AFRICA CONTRASTED WITH CANADA.—A “LETTER FROM FRED MACRAE.—THE ISLANDERS’ WISH.
Mr Seymour Young, of Pownal, has received a letter from Fred EcRae, dated Naumpoort, April 27th. He gives a splendid description of the pursuit of Cronje and the battle of Paardeberg. The latter part of the letter is as follows:
“We are greatly surprised to hear of Boer sympathizers in Prince Edward Island. Sometimeswe wish they were in the Boer trenches that we ceuld dis- pose oft hem.
[am sure that the tour in the political tide at home must have creat ed great excitement. Though vou wish me home I prefer being here, fascinating as politics is.
Canadians have always been read- ing abcut the great resources of South Africa’ They are vast, no doubt, but nothing to Canada’s. Gold and diamonds are the backbone of South Africa’s wealth. Last year the two totalled abouc £18,coo,0co, or less than £ 1,000,000 more than Canada’s cheese or fish for 1895. The ‘Tiars- vaal, Orange Free Staze, Natal and Cape Colony produce coal, but ou Cape Breton company mines more} than all of South Africa. The pro- duction of wool, sheepskins, goatskins, tea, sugar, fish, etc., is enormous, but it does not approach Canada’s lumber, grain and live steck. The fruit o1 Seuth Africa is out of the race with the fruit of Canada. This country has few manufacturing industries; Canada
has many. South Africa has not the advantage of inland shipping. But though this country suffers much in comparison with our country it will yet become great under the British.
Theig is a g-eat numer of Canadians ill and a large percentage of Islanders. But they will all get well.

Interesting Letter From One of the Boys of Company ‘G.”
Mr. Arther Dillon writes from Water- works Drift, April 24;
Some time has elapsed since I last wrote you, but everything ie so elack out here there is absolutely nothiag to qrite about exce_t long marches. We started from Bloemfontein three days ago and have been chasing the Boers all the time, from early in the morning until late at night, but we cannot get them to stand. Today about two hundred of the Borrs tried to m.ke 8 stand at the water works, a position they had held for three weeks, bret on our arrival, as soon as our artillery fired three ehells, they started to run.
