Provincial Parks Perspective INTERPRETATION WEEK

This past summer Provincial Parks hosted its first Interpretation

Week highlighting a Nature Festival and Nature Craft Fair at Brudenell River. The project was inspired by Rob McCloskey and made possible

by the voluntary participation of several organizations and businesses

including the PEI Natural History Society.

Our object was to increase naturalist activities at the park and

to involve as many groups and individuals as possible in nature related activities. Activities included an early morning bird

walk followed by breakfast, a demonstration of some live furbearers, wildfowl taxidermy, lobster-trap building, wildflower garden walk, nature painting, herbs, fly-casting and fly-tying, a sunset canoe

hike, and basket weaving.

The idea for an environment week or a park's week is used during

the summer in other provinces and is on the agenda for an upcoming discussion among parks ministers across Canada. The week provides an opportunity to focus on our environment and we propose broadening the event to include other parks across the province. It is also proposed that an annual theme be chosen for the week on which to

focus programs and activities.
