Perpetual Motion.—The “perpetual motion” machine invented by Mr. B. | J. Forster, of Glenwilliams, has been honored with a lengthy description in the Scientific American. Briefly,the machine consists of a number of cylin- ders containing air, which, expanding and contracting as it is aflected by the constantly varying temperature outside the cylinders, creates the force that is used to drive the mag¢hinery. As the American says, “this machine wil! hardly be classed among perpetual motion machines ot

the usual types, us it has an ever varying force of nature behind it which will cause it to operate} so lony as heat and cold aternate, 01 until the machine is destroyed by wear or time.”

Disinfecting Power of Streams.—In avswer to Dr. Emmerick, of Munich, who advocated the priociple that air and water in motion were the best and cheapest methods of disinfection, at the German Association for Public Sani- tations, Prof. Virchow of Bertin stated that experiments made by the Prussian Government resulted in establishing the fact that within one crbic centi- meter, taken from the river Spree above Berlin, 10,000 germs capable of de- velopment were found. At the city itself the number was 950,000, be!ow Berlin 4,800,000, and further down a Charlottenburg as many as 10,180,000. Professor V irchow expresses the opivion that open water courses in cities of 100,000 inhabitants aad upward should be free from the introduction of im- purities, and reminded his hearers that it is a mistake to suppose that fast flow- | ing streams carry away everything of a noxious nature.

Household Hints.

Fresh Mackerel. — Clean the fish ; seald‘a bunch of herbs and chop them fine, and put them with ene ounce of butter, three tablespoonfuls of soup stock into a stewpan. Lay in tbe mackerel, and simmer gently for ten minutes. Lift them out upen a hot dish; dredge a little flour, and add salt, cayenne, 2 little lemon-juice, and | finally two tablespoonfuls of cream ; | let these just boil, and pour over the | fish,

Boiled Tongue.—If the tongue is not hard, soak it not more than three hours. Put it into a stew pan with plenty of herbs; let it come to a_ boil, skim, and | simmer gently until tender; peel of the skin and garish it with parsley and lemon.
