Mr. J. F. Arnett Re-Elected To Head S'side Red Cross

The, annual meeting of the Summerslde branch of the Red Cross society was held yesterday afternoon in the Town Hall with, as usual, many reports of excell- ent and extensive work carried out during the year. The President. Mr. J. F. Arnett. presided and the entire slate of officers was re- elected for another term.

The slate is as follows: Presi- dent. .T..F. Ai-nett; vice president. Miss Carrie Holman; co-chairmen of women's work. Mrs. R. L. Wil- let and'M.rs.Vlctor Travers; treas- uror. Mrs. W. F. Strong; secret- ary. Mrs. P. Green; executive. Mrs. Helen Dtckleaon and Mrs. D. F. McNeill: Provincial executive members: blood donors. Mr. W. A Currie; first aid. Dr. Austin De- laney; swimming and water saf- ety. Mr. Ross MacKenzie; I-Iome Makers' Service, Miss Millicent strong.

At the beginning of the meet- ing Mr. Arnett referred to the death during the year of his pre- decessor as president, Mr. John E. Campbell. and of Mrs. Ernest Mills, who had been an active Red Cross worker. The members observed a minute's silence in memory of these departed mem- bers.

Commenda Members

Mr. Arnett. commended the members for their fine work dur- lng the year and reminded them that the Red Cross campaign for funds will be held in the near fut- urr-. He said that last year this nrovlnce did not reach its object- ive and he felt that the great need for ftinds should be stressed and the fine work that the Red Cross docs should be pointed out Mr. Arnett then welcomed His Worship. Mayor Henry Wedge. who addressed the meeting brief- ly. complimenting the members on the excellent work that is be- ing done.

The Ir:-asurer's report was pre- scnted by the treasurer. Mrs. W. F. Strong. It was disclosed in the statement of receipts and expend- liures that bequests had been made to the Society in the amount of sum from the late Mar- lon Holland and in the amount of 510931 from the late Grace Beat- tio. Donations had been rs-ceivecl for disaster relief amounting to S200 25 and the sum of 3330.25 had been paid out for this purpose to linadquarters in Charlottetown The sum of 3800.00 was paid to the fund for the Home Mnkers' Service.

Mr. W. A. Ctirrir-'s report. for the Blood Donor's Clinic showed flint there had been 420 donors during: the past year but he point- rd out that this is not sufficient for local needs. The report on swimming and water safety was handed in by Mr. Kenneth Call- l'cck. representing the Y's Men's Club. It showed that 200 persons moi been enrolled last. summer and 140 had received awards.

Provides Good Service

Miss Millicent Strong gave the rcport for tho llovie Makers' committee which p"rii'lded com- petent assistance in homes where there are cliilrli-on and the moth- er is ill. Fifty-seven calls had been received and 518 days of service given. Mrs. Victor Trav- ers reported for the sick room supply loan service and said that 60 nrllcles had been loaned dur- lng the year. including hospital beds and wheel chairs. which had been of great benefit to the peo- ple concerned.

Miss Gladys Holman reported for women's work and said that 1.300 articles had been shipped out for the needy in Europe and that 35 blankets had been donated through the branch for Manitoba flood relief. she expressed grat- itude to Women's Institutes. Church organizations and indiv- iduals for assistance. Also 125 articles had been given to the Prince County Hospital.

Mrs. W. F. Strong paid a special tribute to the work that is being done by Miss Gladys Holman for the Red Cross and through it for the people of the country. She said she would like the people to know of her efforts which are untiring.-S.

The Regent. Miss Wanda Wyatt. presided at the January meeting of the Abegweit Chapter of the I. O. D. E. on Thursday afternoon in the Town Hall Summaraide. The secretary reported chat 5 let- ter of appreciation had been re- cetved from the Dentaal Clinic for the donation of 810.00. The treas- urer's report was gratifying.

Mrs. Thane A. Campbell. Pro- vincial eclucattonal secretary, re- ported that the I. 0. D. E. burs- ary of 51.600 had been announced and that it is available to Island students taking the matriculation examinations and entities them to four years in Llilversity.

Mr. Gordon Lidatcne, of sum- meraide was awarded the bursary last year an is now taking a pre- law course at Mount Allison Un- lvorsity.

lVD'. Charles Road of Coleman was awarded the overseas scholar- ship last year and is taking a post graduate course in sdil chemistry at an university in England. Mrs. F. W. Strong presented a report on child and family welfare and Mrs. J. W. Lecky announced that the marathon bridges had been start- ed. -

Mrs. A. S. Hopkins reported that arrangements were being made for holding a party and auction sale at the home of Mrs. E. T. Tonton. Summer Street in February.

Mrs. Eric MacKay-reported the donation of forty-six I. O. D. E. calendars to the schools in Town and country.

Nominations were received for officers for the coming year and will be voted on at the annual meeting in February. The meet- ing closed with the National An- them.-S

The funeral of the late Honour- able Horace Wright, who passed away in the .E.l. Hospital last Sunday. was eid on Wednesday afternoon. and wasinne, of the most largely attended in this com-inuniiy for a long time. There was a short service at the home Lower Bedeque at l p.m.. then to the United Church, Bedeque Vii- lage. The service was in charge of the pastor. Rev. Mr. Crowe. He iv:-is assisted by Rev. L. P. Archi- bald, Middle Musquodoboit. N.S.. Rev. George Somers. Sum- merslde. Rev. C.'A. Britten. pastor of Central Bedeque Baptist Church and Rev. E. S. Weeks. Bcdeque. The two hymns: "The Lord's My Shepherd" and "Faith of Our Fathers" were suing. Rev. Mr. Archibald delivered the ser- mon. In the course of his fine eulogy of the deceased he noted the place Mr. Wright had taken in promoting the welfare of. not only his own community, but tho general good of the whole Pib'-' Vince. Mr. Wright will be greatly missed in the church. of which he was an elder for many years. as well as in his own home and in the surrounding areas. Much sympathy is extended to Mrs. Wright and family. interment was in Lower Bedeqiie cemetery.

Schurman, who is seeking re-eler- tion. Mr. Roger: is the ion of a former mayor and the grandson of a former town chairman.
