Was Miilman Innocent? Orrawa, Aug. 14.

Disturbing doubts have risen as to the guilt or innecence of William Millman, lately hanged at Charlottetown, P. E. 1., tor the murder of his sweetheart. Evidence has been laid before the Minister of Jus- tice which, if true, proves that Millman’s life was sworn away by a person implicated la the murder.

Lance Deatu Rate.—The mortality returns of Montreal tor July are exceptionally heavy, aggregating 693 deaths, 98 Protestant and 595 Roman Catholic. The infant mortality total- led 243 from diarrheeal diseases; 17 children died from diphtheria. From zymotic diseases the deaths were; Diphtheria, 40; typhoid, 7; acariatina, 6, and measles, 16.

Arrer Damaces.— The other day Mrs. Cassidy stumbled over a cellar-way on the Regent Street sidewaik and fell, breaking her arm. Mrs. Cassidy, through her counsel, Mr. Geo. F. Gregory, presented a petition to the city council Tuesday night, claiming damages for the injuries sustained. Dorcuesren PENITENTIARY.— Reports re- ceived from this institution indicate ineffi- ciency somewhere among those entrusted with the confinement of the prisoners at night. A short time ago several prisoners, by some means or other, sprung the locks ot the doors in their cells and got out in the corridors, but their plans of escape were frustrated by one of the guards, who had been attracted by the noise they had made. Recently two other cen ran away from the institution; the atter, it seems, had been outside the enclosure. They were fired on by the guards, the inform- ant says, and one of them, who is believed to be a prisoner from Charlottetown undergoing 4 sentence for murder, was shot in the arm. Both were re-captured.—St. John Telegraph.
