‘This was our course,’ said Wylie. General Rolleston looked up; ‘Why did you desert the cutter ? The mate looked at old Wardlaw, and after sume hesitation, replied:

‘After we lost sight of her, the men with me declared that we could not reach either Juan Fernandez or Valparaiso with our stock of provisions, and insisted on stand- ing for the sea track of Auctralian liners between the Horn and Sydney.’

This explanation was received in dead silence. Wylie fidgeted, and his eye wan- dered round the room,

General Rolleston applied his compasses to the chart.

‘I find that the ‘Proserpine’ was not one thousand miles from Easter Island. Why did you not make for that land?’

‘We had’no charts, sir,’ said Wylie tothe merchant, ‘and I’m no navigator.’

‘lL see no land laid duwn hereaway, northeast of the spot where the ship went down.’

‘No,’ replied Wylie, ‘that’s what the men said when they made me ‘bout ship.’ ‘Then why did you lead the way north- east at all?’

‘I'm no navigator,’ answered the man, sullenly.

He then suddenly stammered out: ‘Ask my men what we went through. Why, sir,’ (to Wardlaw) ‘I can hardly believe that I am alive, and sit here talking to you about this cursed business; and nobody cffers me a drop of anything.

Wardlaw poured him out a tumbler of wine. His brown hand trembled 6 little, and he gulped the wine down like water.

General Rolleston gave Mr. Wardlaw « look, and Wylie was dismissed. He slonched down the street all in a cold per- spiration; but still clinging to his three thousand pounds, though small was now his hope of ever seeing it.

When he was gone General Rolleston paced that large and gloomy room in silence. Wardlaw eyed him with the great- est interest, but avoided speaking to him. At last he stopped short and stood erect, as veterans halt, and pointed down at the chart.

At this, the truth must be told, the two stout old men embraced one another like two women, and cried together a little.

But that was soon over with such men as these. They sat together and plunged into the details of the expedition, and they talked themselves into hope.

In a week the ‘Springbok’ steamed down the Channel on an erraud inspired by love, not reason; to cross one mighty ocean, and grope for a lost daughter in another.

New London Items.

Shipping is now over for the season, and the bay and rivers are frozen up.’ Not- withstanding the fact that prices abroad have ruled iow, afair amount of produce has been shipped from this port this season, and prices paid for produce here have been quite as good as in the capital.

Owing to prices being low, many of our farmers are holding over large quantities of oats for spring prices. The sale of potatoes has been very limited, and unless the faimers go extensively into feeding cattle, there will be a very heavy surplus on hand for spring shipment. Cattle-feeding should be a profitable business when feed is so low as at present. Good fat cattle have sold well here all the year, and in- dications are that good beef cattle will command a high figure in the spring.

Notwithstanding the general outery of dull times, and which the Grits are con- tinualiy alleging to be the outcome of the N. P., it. may be well assumed that the times here ate fairly good, when it is found that at the sitting of the County Court held here on Tuesday last, the business was very much smatler than formerly at the same seasun of the year.

id: +- The introduction of the present County

Court Act with its few sittings is a great improvement on the old Small Debt Act with its monthly term. Litigation has been checked in a great degree and much time and muney saved, In this comnection it way be remarked Judge Alley has merited and receives universal praise and com- mendation tor the fearless manner in which ke cut down overcharges in certain suits at the last sitting of the court. The opinion obiained here formerly that there was no redress against a doctor's exorbitant charges, That idea is now happily exploded. The defendants who contested those suits on Tuesday were not only benefited thereby themselves but the whole community feel that they are also bevefited in the safety afforded them in this connection while Judge Alley rules the court.

The well known lecturer, Mr. Joseph Rogers, of Freetown, will lecture in Stan- Jey Hall, on the evening of the 12ch inst. His subjees “Dignity of labor,” I consider a well-chosen one, and will, no doubt, be ably handled. This being the first lecture of the season in New London will, no doubt, be well patronized.

The busy season being over it is to be hoped the proj-cted Branch Railway to connect New London with the main line and County Line branches will now receive the attention and advocacy its importance demand,
