DEBATING SOCIETY REFORMS STUDENT UNION

Well, the UPEI debating society is on the road. This weekend (November 6-8) will find some of our best debaters at St. Thomas University at the Atlantic Invitational tournament. This tournament is an annual event, and for us our first tourna- ment of the season. There are six rounds of debate and three rounds of public speaking. That means that each team debates six times, each time against a different team. One of our more cynical members pointed out that that makes it possible to actually place thirtieth at the tournament. (Hopefully that won’thappen!) .

Each society receives a resolution a week before the tourna- ment and has that time to prepare some topics for the resolution.

This is the prepared resolution, and for this tournament it is “*Tommorow had been cancelled due to lack of interest’’. The debaters can twist that into any topic, as long as the transition from one resolution to the other is believable. Of course, the tournament isn’t all work; the schedule includes parties and pub rounds, too. I’msure our debaters won’t be asleep by ten on either Friday or Saturday night!

One of our recent in-house debates centered around a plan that could be an alternative (albeit far-fetched!) to UPEI’s current Student Union problems. The resolution started as ‘‘Two cats can make a good rat’’ and was defined by the government (Darren Stretch and Edward Lank) as ‘‘UPEI’s Student Union should consist of two political parties’’. The government stated that a two-party system would encourage participation and democracy, and would provide students with a party that fit their ideology (right or left wing). The opposition (Andrew MacPherson and Janice Enman) argued that two parties would divide UPEI in half instead of promoting common goals, and that the parties would be too busy opposing one another to concentrate on leading the Student Body. Certainly this plan is a little radical, but anything is possible!
