The U.P.E.I. Student Union General Meeting held November 30, 1977, at 3:00 p.m. in Duffy Amph. 'Ihere were only 50 students in attendence. A general meeting is suppose to be of the entire student population which‘at U.P.E.I. happens to be 1486 stud- ents. 50 students is a very poor percentage of almost 1500.

The members present . did not affect the qual- ity of the meeting. It was felt by a number of people that this was one of the better student meetings of the past num— ber of years.

The meeting was called to order by The Student Union Speaker, Mr. Alan Hilton. Mr. Hilton ex- plained that four members

George McGibbon, Stu- dent Union President was introduced by the Speaker. Mr. McGibbon stated that he had been in office for only eight weeks (he was elected in late Sept.) but his report was going to start last May lst. It was on May lst that the 1977—78 executive was suppose to take of- fice. The past presi— dent had resigned May lst of last year. There was no president during the summer months. The Vice— President took over as Acting President.

NbGibbon listed a num- ber of topics and he in— vited questions. for the following discussion.

ial Hall to the area oc- cupied by the former Day Care Centre in the Barn,

was moved to the base- ment of Marion Hall next door to the medical Cen- tre. :4. The Newspaper offices have moved from the basement of Memorial to 4th floor Main, 5.

The Administration has promised $1000 to help cover cost of moves and rennovations, 6. $20,000 has been paid to the Un- iversity, part of the debt on the barn. "Ihe Student Union still owes the University $23,726.

7. Pat Inghram was hired as Student Union Secre— tary, 8. Renovations" to the Barn have been com- pleted, (Executive Offi— ces and storage room as well as a main office.)

9. Repairs to Barn, 10. Fall Fest made a profit of $518, 11. Coffee Hou- ses have been started and have been very succes- sful, 12. Drama Society has been started and it too has been very succ— essful. 13. A constitu— tion Committee has been started. This Committee is to revise our Student Union Constitution, 14. Land-lord Tenant Act Com- mittee has been set up.

This committee is to look into the rights of ms- ident Students.

NbGibbon felt we have had a very productive > Fall Semester. 7 'Ihe exe- cutive have made a number of mistakes "but they feel they were due to inex— perience. He felt the Executive will do better second term.

Mr. Hilton then intro— duced Kevin Gauthier, Vice—President of the Union.

Mr. Gauthier explained that the Vice-President

is in charge of all sub- committees. Mr. Gauthier discussed a number of com-- mittees, sure of these be- ing 1. Social Committee- Deb NbMurdo as chairman

three coffee houses. The group spent only $75.

‘Ihere will be two more Coffee houses before Xmas,

4- Tne Drama Club which was started this year held a variety show which was a great success.

Club Chairwoman, Joan NIacFarlane is planning

a 3-Act play and also Campus Cabaret for next semester, 5. A.F.S., (At- lantic Federation of Stu- dents mil decided at the first of the semester to withhold funds from A.F.S. Mr. Gauthier

and Mike Mathen have been attending A.F.S. meetings so far this semester. Council, at their last meeting de— cided to pay the $1500 A.F.S. fees and the cheque will be sent some- time in the near future.

6. Winter Carnival is slated for the week of Jan 25th. Gerald McKenna is Chairman once again this year. Plans are moving along well and Carnival 78 promises to be one of the best ever.

7. The Constitution Com— mittee under the Chair—

The Union will start ac- cepting books next week.

All a student has to do i is have his books at the Barn with the price he wants to sell his books for.

John Neville, Student Union Treasurer, was the next to present his re— port. John started off by stating that he was only going to comment on a few topics. He had the cash flow and the Auditors re- port if people wanted then to be presented, but he felt that the majority of people would only be bored if he read ’off a list of figures.

Mr. Neville stated that all clubs presented their budgets to him by the middle of October. From these he drew up the Budget for the Student Union. * ’

Student Union movies issued through checks which must be oo—signed by the treasurer and Pre- sident. Micky \Plaoe, S.U. Business Manager issues all cheques. The Union has two accounts,

a checking account and short term deposits.
