Rough water, however, caused a postpone- ment until the afternoon, when the race was rowed on the harbor. At the start the Lun- enburgers had an advantage and succeeded in keeping the lead for about a quarter of a mile, when the West End crew overhauled ther: and went ahead. The Boston crew maintained their lead throughout the race, coming in about ten lengths ahead. The victory apparently was an easy one. Tue Adams Express Company have had the following bonds stolen while in transit. The bonds are unnegotiable :—Nimeteen One Thou- sand Dollar Coupon Bonds of the Leavenworth City and Fort Leavenworth Water Company, of the State of Kansas, bearing date of Feb. 1, 1882, and made payable to the American Loan and Trust Company, Boston, Mass., or bearer. Semianaual coupons attached, in- cluding that dated Feb. 1, 1883. Bonds num- bered No. 152 to No. 170 inclusive.

A meetrne of the City Council was held \lastevening. The usual number of. accounts | disputed and otherwise, were read and ordered |to be paid. Three thousand dollars were ordered to be paid the City School Trustees on account. A resolution was passed to the effect that no articles shall hereafter be fur- nished by storekeepers or others to any servant of the city without a requisition from the City Council A resolution regarding the Canada Temperance Act fines was also passed. It appears that a petition has been sent to the Government, asking that half the fines collected under the Act be paid to the prosecutor. To this the Council ob- jects, and hence they passed a resolution to employ a counsel—L. H. Davies, Esq.—who will see that the full fines collected under the Act are paid into the City Treasury. The meeting then adjourned. silencio

A cask of assault was tried by the Stipen- diary Magistrate, this forenoon. It was be- tween John Jackson, a chimney sweep, and Conductor McGowan. Jackson, it appears, was employed to sweep achimney near Mr. McGowan’g residence, but he unfortunately mistook the proper chimney, and applied the apparatus to Mr. MeGowan’s. It is easy to imagine the consequence. No one could bear it, and the Conductor was not an except op. Climbing “o the roof, where Jackson sat com- placently on the chimney, working his brush, he laid heavy hands upon him, and used him as freight not marked ‘handle with care ~ Jackson sought redress in the court; but, this ‘forenoon, the Magistrate wisely decided that |** Thou shalt not sweep a neighbor's chimney, ‘without giving due notice thereof.” The case was dismissed.
