CONCERT AT SOURIS.
A fairly large audience attended at St. Patrick’s Hallon Wedeneday evening last, to listen to a concert given by Miss Aimee Cecil Jones, Dr. MeLellaun, Dr. W. O. Peake end others. The recitations, songs and posings rendered by Miss Jonee were very well executed and Dr. Peake as an Irish comedian brought roars of laughter from the audience who gave him great app'ause. The Ochestra conducted by Dr. McLellan was also bighly appreciated. Following is the programme rendered ;—

The French government claims that many treaties made with African potentates in behalfof France take precedence over the treaties negotiated in behalf of the British Niger Company.

The Dean of Rochester gave the follow- ing picture of the cendition of the cburch a the past at the recent Church Congress in England: “Sixty years ago the Ohurch ot England «1s thechurch of the rich and mot of the poor. In the villages thet house of God was the dreariest and most agglect- ed of all, and in the towns it was the house of merchandise, ocoupied most entirely by those who paid = for the pews. There was ome service on Sunday. The celebrations were quarterly. The sick were only visited when death was imminent. The shepherds live! away from the sheep. They ate of the fat and ‘clothed themseives with the wool, but they did not feed the flock. The lwity were alike to be blamed. Anornen Tropay.—The trophy won by the 82nd Battalion team in the last competition of the Canadian Military Rifle League, arrived Jastevening and may be seen in the show window of Captain Stewart’s store on Kent Street. The trophy is in the form ofa valuable picture, richly framed, entitled ‘Napoleon Leaving Fontainbleau After His Abdication.” Ona brass plate underneath the picture is in- scribed, ‘ Canadian Military Rifle League, 1897, won by 82ad Battalion.” The Battal- iou won ninth place in the competition, and the picture is valued at $25.
