in Paria two weeks ago. He Juan Jose Sempe, the adjutant and chief exeeutive of the Spanish pre tender, Don Carlos,

Sempe was arich lawyer when he met Don Carlos in Pau. He beoame interested, then hypnotized by the oanse of the pre- tender As he sat in the hotel one after- noon at a wedding breakfast a messenger He read it, pat on his hat, and for five not seen again by his nearer friends. The dispatch was from Don Carlos, who, as soon as Sempe reached him, handed him a thousand 1,000-frane potes, saying

‘Deposit this money in the bank. It is to be used in beginning the war. Then come back to me and we will cross the Spanish border.”

Sempe obeyed. He disguised Don Carlos, and tried to get him iuto Spain an- observed, but they both were detained by Spanish soldiers The commander of the soldiers did not recognize Don Carlos, but was convinced that he was an im-

Sempe put on Don Carlos’ disguise during the night and Onee outside the camp, he let the soldiers know of his where- abouts, and ther, sapposing that the more important of the prisoners had got away, gave chase, leaving Don Carlos in hes to wander off at his leisure. Sempe was caught, but Don Carlos reached France ia safety. Sempe was sbused and half starved in captivity, but he bore his sufferings without a murmur, and subse- quently he entered the Carlist war without much bope of anything save showing bis faithfulness to his friend, the pretender.

He left Spain at the close of the war without a penny of his former fortune. | He could not practice law in his native land and in Paris there was no professional way open to him. He and his wife lived ia two rooms with only the money which he earned as a copyist to support thei. | Eventually he got a clerkship in a bauk | with a salary of $350 a year. | As clerk he worked uncomplaininyly, |} without appeal to the powerfal persons who were once his friends, year in and year out, until his wife died. After her death he told an acquaintance that be had seen enough of life, aud had no heart for | more of it. He then sank steadily to his | death.

found only 40 cente in money, a package | of letters from Don Carlos, a mannscript of memoirs of the Carlist war, and a few of old, plain furniture. On the first pase of the memoirs were the words: ‘Faithful unto death.” — New York Son.

The Oldest Matheuinetint Book.

The oldest mathematical book tn the world, which dates some 4000 years back, and was written in Egypt, contains a rule for squaring the circle, The rule given is to shorten the diameter by a ninth, and on the line so obtained to construct a square; and this, thongh far from being exact, is near enough for most practical purposes. Since then the amateur squarer of the cir- cle bas been a thorn in the side of the pro- fessional mathematician. Learned socie- ties, at last, in pure self-defence, made a rale that all solutions of the problem sent to them should, without examination, be cousigned to the flames. In the last cen- tury a Frenchman named Maithulus was so sure he had succeeded in squaring the circle that he offered a reward of $1,000 to anyone who proved his solution erron eous. It was shown to be erroneons if not to his own satisfaction, at least to that of the courts, and he had to pay the mo:ey. Mathematicians have long been convinced that the solution was impossible; put it is only a few years since they were able to

CAUSE OF BOWEL COMPLAINTS, The direct cause of pain and looseness of the bowels, is an irritation of the muc- ous membrane of the same, sufficient to produce exceasive peristaltic or worm-like motiou in the interior of the bowele, thus the partly digested food matter is kept con- stantly passing along and evacuated freely. This is called a diarrhoea; where the irri- tation is ensugh to cause bleeding, we hava dysentery. Indirect causes of dia- rrbcea, by which an irritation is started are intestinal dyspepsia, overeating unripe or over-ripe fruit, tainted meats, or oysters etc.; torpor of liver, by which not evough bile is secreted; excessive flow of bile, etc; TrReaTMent. Thoroughly evacuate the bowls with Parsons’ Pills, they are among the best to get rid of all irritating matter. Then take Johnson’s Anodyne Liniment in teaspoonful doses diluted with water, every four hours, and oftener if the case is severe. In case of Asiatic cholera, one teaspoonful shouid be given every half hour. Thousands of people remember the year 1849, when the worse known epidemic disease spread over this country. Johnson’s Anodyne Liniment at that time was little known ontside of the state of Maine. But fur its use at that time by its friends, many would not now live to spread the joyful newe that any case of diarrhee, dysentery, cholera- morbua, or kindred diseases, can be cured by Johnson’s Anodyne Liniment.
