Dr. Parkhurst Asserts That it Must be

Learned Just as Spelling Is. “The Passion of Money-Getting” is the topic of Dr. Charles H. Parkhurst’s paper in the December Ladies’ Home Journal. In discussing one phase of his theme he says: A man cannot be trusted to do right

linthis (the art of giving) or in any

other particular till he can do right easily, that isto say until it has be- come his habit to do right. Giving cannot be left to impulse any more than spelling can be left to impulse. We have seen what might be called impulsive spellers, and they make just the same wretched work with orthog- rephy that impulse-giving makes with charity. Nor is the purpose subserved by puttinginto the child’s hands asa gratwity the money that he is expected to bestow as a beneficence. Merely letting money go through his hands will not make him charitable any more than letting water slip through a lead pipe will make the lead fertile. The act that is going to strengthen the little boy-giver or the little girl-giver in the direction of a matured generous dis- position must be an act in which the actor feels that he is parting with some thing thatis his own, not something which he is merely handling in the capacity of agent. It is a very com- mon thing, if there is a beggar at the door to whom a pittance is to be given, or a gathering in the church or the Snnday School where the contribution box is to be passed, for the child to ol tain from its father or mother the requisite penny, and then for the child and parent bothto imagine that the child was somehow involved in and disciplined by the penny’s conferment. The child in the Sunday School does not learn to give in that way any more than the child in the spelling class learns to spell by the bare mimicry of the letters that the teacher her If puts into the child’s mouth.

We learn to spell by making the spelling-act our act. We learn to give by makingthe giving-act ouract. It is hoped that this truism will touch a vibrating chord in the intelligences and hearts of parents. The world is full of moneyed men, but really, great as is the amount bestowed in benefaction it sustains a very feeble ratio to the amount that men and women bestow on themselves; and itis not because these people are intentionally sordid and have no blood in their hearts, but because years ago, when they were children, their parents imagined that while schooling would be necessary in order to qualify their offspring to read and write, no schooling in particular would be necessary in order to educate them into the far more difficult capa- bility of parting with their own pos- sessions in the interests of and for the bettering of others ; safeguarding the lesser, trusting to chance the greater,

A reporter of the Sentinel recently drop- ped into the Victoria Hotel looking fF general news and to scan the register for arrivals. Among those present he noticed a well dressed farmer sitting reading & small pamphlet. The reporter asked the landlord if there was apytbing new, and being answered in the negative the ia.imer turned and addressed him. “Looking for n:we,eh? Well, sitdown and Il’il give you something worth publishing.” The reporter was at once on the alert and the farmer continued, “You see this littl book [heldin my hand? Well the atle of 1t is “Pive Prize Stories” and there is more yood sense in it than in half of the philo -ophical works of the day and it don’t lay in any of the stories either. Well about a year ago I got hold of another Irttle book by the same author entitled “Four Generations” which i read carefully turuugh and one very im- portant thing I readin it was, Leware of imitations, just as I read in this little book. Now I wish to show how I had been iakeu in (deceived) and how I found it out and how near it came to costing me the d.arest member of my household. Well to begin at the beginning: My name 8 Snepberd Banks; lreside 11} miles from the town of Bristol, Carleton Co. N. B., and am a well todo farmer. For s: vera! years my wife was troubled with pains in the back and weakness of the kidneys. About two years age she was taken very ill the trouble taking the form of acute rheu- matism.
