The Customs’ Matter.

It seems that the Minister of Customs did not wait for the presentation of a forma] memorial; but as soon as he heard— through Tre Examinen—that the meeting of the merc)iants of Charlottetown had been held, he telegraphed to the Inspector, Mr Wolff, to assure ‘the merchants that he would give them every facility, and to express regret that inconvenience and an_ had occurred. Condition of Ireland.

The present stir in Ireland will turn at- tention to the condition of that beautiful isle —‘sweet est isle of the ocean’ —to an un- usual degree. A writer in the Contempor- ury for November devotes an excellent ar- ticle to the task of showing the actual con- dition of the country, and the progress that has been made since the direful famine of 1846. The potato famine thirty-three years ago was one of the saddest episodes in in the modern history of Europe. One thing came very clearly to light—that Ireland was greatly over-peopled, and very, very poor—down at the very nadir of social comfort. This was a quarter of acentury ago. What is the condition of Ireland now! In 1845 the population of Ireland reached the enormous total of eight millions and a quarter. It is now but five millions and a quarter. But the condition of the inhabitants has improved immensely, and the wealth has multiplied wonder- fully. Small farms of {two or three, or five, or six acres have to a large extent disappeared ; but tha number of tenants at will is still enor.nous, namely, over half a million. In 1841 there} were in Ireland of mud cabins containing but one rooin no fewer than 491,278. In 1871 the nuwber had fallen to 155,657, and no doubt the reduction has been going on rapidly ever since. These cabins often contain no window, no floor, no chimney. Mud cabins with three rooms and windows in 1871 numbered 357,126, an increase over 1841. But the favorable fact is that good comfortable farm heuses increased in 30 years from 264,000 to 387,000.. The best class of houses increased during the same period over 20,000. The population ocen- pying the lowest class of houses has greatly decreased, while those occupying the best class of houses have increased. Wages have risen also. The people eat better food and more of it. Pauperism has also fallen to about 14 in every 1,000,—a smaller pro- portion than in England or even Scotland. [It is curious that while in England one man in every 118 has been brought before the magistrates for being drunk, and in Scotland one in 134, in Ireland the propor- tion of one in every 47 has been reached. Though, this is so, yet there is reason to believe that there is really quite a much drinking and drunkenness in England and Scotland as in the sister isle. In 1876 only four persons were sentenced to death in all Ireland, while in England the number was thirty-two. The lrish murders were nearly

all agrarian; the English murders were nearly all the result of drunkenness, The

criminal record of Ireland for a number of years has been smaller than that of England. The trade of Ireland has been increased immensely, and its wealth is greater now by far than ever it was before. Multitudes of the most substantial of the inhabitants are rich enough to be ardentiy desirous of preserving peace and order. _ Oe ao er Oo

He belonzel to Liverpool and leaves five orphan children. A subscription was taken up among the cabin passengers and $150 was realized.

CANADIAN LAMBS.

Canadian lambs continue to be patronized in the markets of the United States, and have of late realized very satisfactory prices. At New York on Wednesday last 2,124 Canada lambs and 191 sheep were sold as follows :— 418 lambs weighing from 72 to 77 lbs, each at 57@5ic; 1,706 do, weighing from 71 to 72 lbs per head, at 53@5}? per lb ; 43 sheep 113 to 126 lbs each, 44@4hc per lb; 148 do, 103 to 120 Ibs each, $3.814@4.75 per 100 lbs.

OATS.

Oats have advanced in Toronto since Ist Nov., 4 to5cents per bushel, with sales at the advance.

POTATOES.

Potatoes sell in St. John at 30 cents per

bushel, and in Boston 50 cts. to 60cts. for Karly Rose.- There is no change to note. BUTTER.

There has been a considerable advance in butter in the west; there is no butter held in Ontario under 1S cents., and for the best 22 to 24cts. is asked. Prices have gone up in the United States markets.

COAL OIL.

Owing to an advance in refined petroleum in the West, the market has become somewhat excited, and prices have advanced to 13c per gallon for car lots in store, 134 and l4e for gg lots and 14}c and l4c for single bar- rels,
