Sr. Groras’s Bay, Nfld, July 11.—Sir Baldwin Walker’s proclamation closing 60 British lobster factories along the west coast of Newfoundland, is practically an edict of starvation to hundreds of people. These sixty factories are closed down by the British warships at the demand of the French Naval officers without any regard to their interference or otherwise with French factories. The French admiral does not claim that a single one of these factories interfere with his people, but says they are in violation of the modus vivendi, and must therefore close down without any regard to the effect upon the helpless people of the coast. The French oflicer cynically remarks that the fate of the people is purely a question for the British authorities to settle in conjunction with the demagogic politicians of St. John’s, who have caused all this trouble.

Hauirax, July 14.—Codfishery fair at English Bay; poor at Fox Bay; poor at Perce, Que., but fair at Newport and Pas- pebiac. The bank fishermen of Caraquet returned yesterday and report good ap- pearance of both fish and bait, but owing to unfavorable weather the daily catch only averaged about two quintals per boat. At Point Escuminac the fishery is fair, On the coast of Cape Breton the fishery in most of the places is poor, but reported fair at L’Ardoise and good at St. Peter’s. Fair fishery reported at Canso, bus poor along the coast to Lunenburg, where it is fair, poor from there to Cape Fleet, where it hes been gvod for some time. Mackerel reported plentiful off Maisonette and Caraquet Islands. ‘(ivod hooking on the north coast of P. E. 1L., from Miminagash round to Tignish, but few were taken to-day in the vicinity of Alberton. No catches of any note on the coast of Cape Breton or Nova Scotia. The average catch at Lunenburg is fair, bat only poor at Pubnice and St. John’s Island. The herring fishery is reported about the same yesterday, no point of in- terest being noted.

Firemen’s Meeting.

A largely-attended meeting of the 1 ° bers of the Fire Depart ment was held in the large Kngine Room, City Building, last evening, to make arrangements for a Moon- hight Excursion, as a preliminary step towards a Firemen’s Tournament to be “> Charlottetown next summer.

Che meeting was called to order by ap- pointing Robert Russell as cay be George M. Moore, Secretary.

After the Chairman had stated the object of the meeting, it was: moved by Chief Engineer Large, seconded by Joha A. Griffith, that a committee of three—to con- sist of the Captain and two men from each Oompany—comprise the Committee, each Company to nominate its own men, which was carried unanimously. The following are the names of the committee :—

The groatest enthusiasm prevailed among the members, and all expressed themselves in favor of making this the most attractive Excursion ever held in this city, Our firemen are always ready and willing to give their services whenever called upon, and we trust that their efforts to bring credit to themselves and the city, in regard to the Tournament, will be appreciated.
