I am in favor of Union on fair and equita- ble terms. It bas been asserted that by going into it we lose Self-Government. I deny it. At present our acts are referred to Downing street for approval, and we are all aware that, on the Land Question, afew Pro- prietors have more influence there than the Government of this Island. Under Union our local acts would have to be approved of by the Central Government. If we kept out of Union, our agricultural and other produce would probably be taxed in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Our vessels would be shut out from the coasting trade, (as they are at present in the United States); for instance. and Island vessel would not be allowed to carry a cargo between Pictou and Halifax. In making Commercial Treaties we would not be in as favuarable a position as if in the Union. We would then have the privilege of being able to sell our ships in France under the Canadian Treaty, When our fisheries were prosecuted we would have the advantage of the Canadian market free. United, I believe, our progress would be much more rapid than if we remain as we are. The much more rapid material progress of the United States, since they obtained their independence, than as Colonies, or as con-
