She turned from one to the other with a@ deep bend, and walked down the ave- nue. Her dreas and carriage were 30 lady- like that I guessed that the lodge porter let her in and out withcut suspicion, but I suggested to Mr. Jones, as she disap- peared, that the man should be warned against doing so in the future. ‘Oh, well, we'll see about that to-morrow,’’ he said, wearily. ‘‘It’s rather hard upon us old fogies that the young fellow should bring down this explosive sort of lady upon our heads. I thought I would not tease him to interrogate Higgins until next day; but as we drew near the house he saw a movement among theshrnbs and clutched at my arm. ‘‘I am nervous to-night,’’ he said, hoarsely. ‘‘I fancied I saw a face thrust out between the evergreens.”’

‘It was no fancy,’’ said I, as I laughed reassuringly. ‘‘It is the night watchman at the brewery. I thought you would like to ask him some questions, so I told him to wait. But you are too tired to- night, Mr. Jones. Putit off until te- morrow morning.’’ The thought of an- other harrassing interview was too much for him. He did not say another single word in answer, but leaned on my arm so heavily that I got frightened, and motioiing to Higgins with my hand to go away, hurried Mr. Jones into the house,

As soon as [had seen him seat himself, in an attitude of Intense weariness, I ran out again to speak to Higgins. But I was too late. Chuckling to himslf in a mocking manner, like a little wiry imp of mischief, the night-watchman, lantern in hand, was vaulting over the wall into his own domain, and vouchsafed no word in answer to my calls.

CHAPTER XVL

The rest of the evening was passed most uncomfortably by all of us. Poor Mrs. Ellis, who felt that this sudden in- flux of friends of Alice’s was a tacit re- proach to her guardianship, was cold and distant to me, alternately dignified and humble to Mr. Jones. He himself was evidently worn out by fatigue and anx- lety, which he in vain tried to disrem- ble by a forced gaiety quite unlike his habitual cheerfulness. Alice, in whose mental condition the improvement seemed to show hour by hour, was de- pressed by her uncle’s manner, and also by certain misgivings of her own, which she confided to me, much to my con- aternation.

It was quite late in the evening; I was shutting up the plano after_having had my efforts to wile away the melancholy of the assemblage by music very much “sat upon.’’ Suddenly I felt Alice’s hand upon my shoulder, and looking round with a start I saw that her great blue eyes were bright with excitement, «nd that the dull and dangerous apathy which had alarmed me so much was gone—for the time at least. ‘‘Winnie,”’ she whispered, ‘‘come into my room when we go up stairs, I want to speak to you,”’

When, therefore, we all separated for the night, I stopped at Alice’s door when I had taken my candle into my Own room, She dragged me in quickly, and shut the door with one of the old, frightened glances around. I put my arm reassuringly around her waist. ‘*Come, Alice,’ I cried, laughingly, “You have nothing to be afraid of now. The person or persons who played yon those cruel tricks won't try them while Mr. Joneg is about, you may be quite sure. "’

After Harry's confession, of course I had the best possible resson to believe we were safe from any move nocturnal frights, and my confidence gave her cour- age. Recovering » calmer manner she told me what was troubling hor,

What could I say? How could I sym- pathize with her, having such good rea- son to fear that he had been treated by us all a great deal too well?

Artificial Quicksanas,

Suppose we take a certain quantity of quicksand, dry it artificially, and then try to make it into quicksand again. Put it into a box and pour water on it carefully. Instantly the water is soaked up, and if we measure the volume or weigh the sand we shall see that it takes up a quantity of water that measures 80 per cent of its own volume, or 20 per cent by weight, the rest remaining upon the layer of sand. If alittle hole is now pierced in the bottom of the box pure water will run out, the sand merely forming a kind of immoyable filter, and if the box is turned upside down the sand remains in its position as a solid mass. If the conditions of experiment, however, are reversed, andthe water is put sie the vessel and into it dry sand is sifted in a thin stream, while the vessel is con- stantly shaken lightly, the thick but easily flowing compound known as quicksand is obtained. If, however, the vessel be allowed to rest the mass again settles down into the conditions »btained by the first experiment.

Member of Parliament,

A Swiss maniac, who was traveling from his native mountains, entered a train bound for Paris somewhere on the frontier, says the London “* Telegraph,” his intention be- ing to go on from the capital to Dieppe, and there to take the boat for New- haven. Two gentlemen, one of whom is a member of parliament, were in the same compartment as the countryman of William ‘Tell, and soon after his en- trance they noticed that his eyes were full of strange fire and that his langu- age was incoherent.

He began totalk about his fear of being murdered and shrieked several times at the phantasmal form of au imaginary assassin whom he pictured as bending over him with a knife. The deputy and his companion did their best to calm the man and succeeded for a time in domg so. While in the act of dozing, however, they were awakened by terrible cries and a tremendous noise. ‘The Swiss had pulled open the door of the carriage and broken the window by the violence of his move- ment. He was standing outside on the footboard, crying “‘ murder,” and pre- paring to crash headforemost into the darkness while the train was going at ful) speed. His traveling companions managed todrag him back, but he at- tacked them with the utmost fury, and would undoubtedly have inflicted on them grievous bodily injury had not the guard, summoned by the alarm signal, arrived in time to assist in ever- powering him. The Swiss, in whose possession were two loaded revolvers, was taken in charge by the police at Lyons.

To Bettius von Arnim—Goethe’s Bettina—for whom he long cherished a hopeless passion, he once said, after trying over a com- position which he had just written, “T made that for you; you inspired me with it. I saw it written in your eyes;” and thisis but a specimen of the gal- lantries to which he was addicted.

Twice at least he proposed—on one occasion to the lady who, as he found to his mortification was already the fiancee of his friend Hummel. That marriage would have saved him from a good many worries, is certain enough; for it must be allowed that, as Emil Naumann delicately puts it, he “did not possess any aptitude for household management.” — Black- wood’s Magazine.
