Mr. Eptror;*~The state of our sidewalks and crossinus deserve the *“‘sweeping” oon- demua'ion of those unfortunate pedestrians who must, perforce, wale knee-deep in the snow to reach their destinations. Two days have now elapsed since we had a tig ful! of snow, and our “ways” are still very difficult of locomy ticn, as our people display most sublime indefference ia cleaning away from the sidewalks~and crossiags in. frent of .their, doors, Thre niany be some excuse in the case of the poorer class of citizens, whose avocations may prevent them doing this most necess- ary work, but there can be no éxense for our rich property holders, those ig charge of eur public buildings, bank, churches, etc., for perpetuating the nuisa .ce wh'c. is most marked in the latter cares. There are plenty of shovels in the town and many willing hands who would gladly do the work for a trifling remoneration. IT need not en- large on the subject. Charlottetown is said by thousands who visit us to be the slowest town in the Dominion, This is not true in main, though we must confess that we ave far behind other cities of l+ss preten- tions especially in the matter of an efticient water supply, a much needed spreading of paint on cur housed, anda general cleanliness of surroundines which sooner or later must have 4 marked effi ct on the general health. Just now a stranger among us might be pardoned for the assertion that our city is behind the age, Were he forced to tramp aleng our streets for a mile or two, and otaerve how utterly oblivious we seem to be in. making the sidewalks and crossings passable, and giving the neat, trim appearance which would be gresented in any other city after such a heavy snow fall as we have had lately.
