Srx thousand two hundred and ninety five immigrants arrived at Toronto during the season from the Ist of January to the 3lst of October ; 4,733 remained in On- tario, and 1,562 went to the States.

Tue rumor of Germany’s intention of oc- cupying the Samoan Islands, is stated to have arisen from a request to England to join in demanding from the Samoan Gov- ernment equal rights with any other nation, for traders, settlers and mariners.

Surprmnc Report.—New York Nov. 15. Arrived brig Annabella, A. F. Yates, from Falmouth. We understand the Annabella will be laid on the berth for Auckland, New Zealand, and will sail from New York about 15th December.

We regret to hear that William Elder, Esq., of the ‘* Telegraph,” has been con- fined to his house for several days with a severe attack of inflammation of the eyes. He has hot been allowed the use of his sight for several days, but is now recover- ing.

WE are requested to state that a meeting of the stockholders of the Merchants Bank of P. E. [sland will be held in the premises oceupied by William McGill, Esq., Welsh & Owen’s building, Queen street, Charlotte- town, on Wednesday next, the 20th inst., at 11 o'clock a. m., preparatory to the meeting at the Bank offices on the same day.

Tue Rev. Brother Black, a Presbyterian minister of Georgia, was sometime accused before his Presbytery of dancing. He pleaded guilty and was cut off from connec- tionwith his Church. He appealed, how- ever, against the Presbytery’s decision and the appeal has been sustained. The Pres- bytery in turn appealed to the General As- sembly which is to meet in May next.

SupnpEN Deatu.—On Tuesday afternoon last while Mr. D. J. Gillis, of Miscouche, was going home from Summerside, he was seen to fall from his wagon, and on picking him up it was found that he had died from apoplexy. Dr. Gillis was at once sent for, but medical aid was of no avail. Deceased was an old resident of Miscouche, and was highly respected. He leaves a wife and family. — Progress.

Japanese Muisstonary.--A large congre- gation assembled last evening in the Metho- dist Church to hear the Rev. Dr. McDon- ald, who for several years has resided in the capital of Japan as Missionary of the Metho- dist Church of Canada. Notwithstanding his residence in the East, where he rarely has occassion to address English audiences, Dr. McDonald has at command a fresh, vigorous and impressive style. He is what our friends across the lines would call a live man. The customs and manners of Japa- nese life, and the present movement throughout that Empire in the direction of Christianity and of a nobier civilization, will be the subject of his address, we under- stand, at the Missionary Meeting advertised in our columns for Tuesday evening. In no cotntry, perhaps, are ‘the prospects of Missions more hopeful than in Japan, and the opportunity of listening to facts and in- cidents of actual life and experience will be appreciated by most thoughful people.

Subscriptions to the new Egyptian loan have closed. ‘The loan was fully subscribed at seventy-three, and the scrip is quoted on exchange at 1 and 1} per cent. premium’

The French Budget Committee have re- duced the estimated expenditure of next year’s budget 2,500,009 francs. The esti- mate for the army is 549,000,000 francs, be- ing an increase of 8,500,000 franes.

A correspondent at Pesth telegraphs :— From ail that has transpired it seems that the reports concerning Count Schouvaloff’s promotion from the London Embassy are for the present unfounded.

It is stated that the Vanderbilt will con- testants closed their case prematurely on Tuesday, because the Surrogate refused to admit certain testimony, and they expect to bring the case back from the Appelate Court for a new trial eventually.

The New York Tribune reports an inter- view with Butle:, in which he claimed to be greatly encouraged as to the future of the Greenback party, and said with the ex- ception of three States, the Republican party is in a minorty in the North.

Axsovtr $100,000 worth of the new Do- minion notes are ready for circulation. The late Government decided, before resigning office, to still continue the issue of such two dollar Dominion notes as were then printed, in view of the fact that the counterfeits were all one’s. After the remnant had been used up, the new two dollar. note, witha vignette of Lord Dufferin, will! be issued.

The New York Post’s Washington special states that the Columbia District Commis- sioners are disposed to be defiant, and threaten, if the money is not forthcoming from the United States Treasury, to close the public schocls, discharge the police force, and stop all the work on the streets. Commissioner Phelps said that unless the money was advanced soon the President would be asked to interfere.

The Duke. of Edinburgh will, it is said, be granted leave of absence, as well as many ofticers belonging to his ship, after the dis- embarkation of the Governor General at Halifax. Itis not at all improbable that the brief detention of the ship on this sta- tion will admit of their being present até the ball to be given at the Windsor Hotel, Montreal, on St. Andrew’s Day. The Duke of Hdinburgh will accompany the Vice-Regal party to Ottawa.

Tut shipments of codfish from St. John’s, N’fld, from Ist August this year foot up 125,977 qtls., against 142,235 qtls. for the corresponding period of last year. The deficiency occurs in the exports to for- eign European ports; all the other markets appear pretty evenly supplied. Cod oil exhibits an export of 565 tons, against 466 tons last year, and seal oil 1,051 tons, against 1,040. Salmon is 214 tierces, and herring 5,901 barrels short.
