ing one, and the here thereof is a well- known young gentleman of this city: He had been somewhat wild in his habits in the past, but for four months he had abstained from drink and spent his evenings at home. One evening. three weeks ago, he went out calling, and some one gave him a glass of wine. This aroused the sleeping fiend, and he went offon agrand carouse. For three days he lost all mastery over himself, and searcely knew where he was. On the morning of the fourth day he war comparatively sobered up. He wander- ed into the reading room of one of our hotels, where he was well known, and sat down and stared moodily into the strect. Presently a littlegirl of about ten yoars came in and looked timidly around the room. She was dressed in rags, but had a sweet, intelligent face that could scarcely fail to excite sym- pathy. There were five persons in the room, and she went to each begging. One gentleman gave her a five-cent piece, and she then went to the gentle- man spoken of and asked him fora penny, adding: “I haven't had any- thing to eat for a wholeday.” The gentleman was all out of humor, and he said crossly; ‘Don’t bother me; go away! 1 havent had any- thing to eat for three days. The child opened her eyes in shy wonder and stared at him for a moment, and then walked slowly toward the door. She turned the knob aud then, after hesitating a few seconds, she turned quickly and wilked straight up to him who had spoken so ill paturedly, and gently laying the five cents she had received on his knee, said with a tone of true girlish pity in her voice, ‘if you havu’t hud anything to eat tor three days you take this and go and buy some bread. Perhaps I can get some more somewhere else.’ The yonng fellow blushed to the roots of his hair, and lift- ing the miniature sister of charity in his arms he kissed her two or threc times in delight. Then he took her to the persons in the room and to those in the corridors and the office, and told the “tory and asked contribations, giving himself all the money he had withhim. He succeeded in rais- ing over $40, und sent the little kindly hearted one on her way rejoiciug.— /’itts- burgh Telegraph. --—-— <2 @--— — A Mystery of the Great Lakes.

There is a mystery about the Ameri- ean Inkes. Lake Erie is only sixty to seventy feet deep. Butlake Ontario is 592 feet deep, 230 feet below the tide level of the ocean, or as iow as the most parts of the Gulfof St. Lawrence; and the bottom of lakes Huron, Michigan and Superior, although the surface is much higher, are all from their vast depths on a level with the bottom of Ontario. Now, as the disearge through the river Detroit, after allowing for the probable portion carried off by evapor— ation, does not appear by avy means equal to the quantity of water which the upper lukes receive, it has been conjectur- ed that a subterranesn river may run from luke Superior by Huron, to lake Ontario. This connection ts net impos- sible, and accounts for the singular fuet that salmon aud herring are caught io all the lakes communicuting with the Sr. Lawrence, but no others. Asthe falls of Niagara must have always «xisted, it would puzzie the naturalists to s»y how these fish got into the upper likes without some subterravean river ; moreover, any pericdical obstruction of the river would furnish a not imprebable solution of the mysterious flax aud reflux of the lakes. — The American Ship.
