THE FAKMHBR'S STRATHGY.

Farmer Evans walked round his wood-pile and surveyed its diminshed proportions with a considerable lower- ing of his shaggy eyebrows. ‘Some- body’s helping themselves,’ he thought; ‘I must set my wits to work to discover the offender.’ He sat down on a log, rested his elbows on his knees, and after scratching bis head awhile, by way of brightening his ideas, he set- tled his head in the palms of his hands and meditated. The result of his cogitations must have been satisfactory, for he rose by aud bye with a queer smile over-spreading his weather-beat- en face, and walked into the house, chuckling, ‘Vildoit; that'll let the cat out of the bag!’

He found Harry Bailey, a yonng, likely-looking farmer, in the kitchen with his daughter.

‘That young tellow is courting Jen- nie, sure enough!’ thought the old/ gentleman, as he discreetly passed into the sitting room. ‘Well, he’s as likely to make a good husband as any one. If she likes him, I shan’t object.’

And he fell into a fit of musing over the memory of the gentle wife who had been lying under the flowers since Jen- : nie’s birth. Meanwhile, in the kitchen Jennie was tripping about. engayed in some household work, and Harry was watching her with love-lit eyes, and could not make up his mind to tell her he loved her.

The Rev. Mr. Walker, of the Ortho. dox Church in Belton, had prepared a discourse for his siuful congregation, upon the subject of endless punishment. The parable of the rich man and Laz- arus was his basis, and he hurled the anathemas of wrath at the black sheep of his flock as though he were an avenging angel, and many members of his congregation felt guilty terrors. Little Tim Bares shivered in his shoes, and thought of the pie he had taken the night betore and then told his mother a lie, and debated where heshould con- fess, or run the risk of the punishment fulminated by the parson. But he did not settle the matter that time, for the minister was suddenly brought to a full stop in the midst of his discourse, and the congregation electrified, by a tre- menduous crash and report in their midst, as if heavenand earth had come together.

Farmer Evan rose to his feet simul- taneously with his frightened daughter and the rest of the congregation, and

How it came there was a mystery to all except farmer Evans. I'm very sorry that he’s that sort; I never suspected him of all others; and Jennio likes him.’

‘You are courting my daughter ?’

‘And you make the fires for the Or- thodox Uhurch ?’ continued the old map.

Hurry assented.

‘ And furnished the wood ?’

‘Yes,’ said the young man, growing red aod. white by turns.

‘Perhaps you would like to have the mysterious explosion in church last Sun- day explained? I knew my wood-pile was going somewhere, and put a small charge ef powder in one of the sticks. I need not say that I was surprised to find you were the thief, and you dared to come courting my daughter!’

Hurry quailed before the stern, clear glance of vne old/waa.

‘4 kuow I'm too mean to live, much less to love her,’ he broke out. ‘I don’t expect you to overlook it. [--l had a hard year on the farm; you know what losses I. met. I meant to pay it back agaio, but I don’t expect you to b. lieve we. _ One thing I beg—doo’t tell her anything about it; 1 couldn't hear to have her think so badly of me.’

The old man regarded the ashamed, re peutant face with pity.

‘ Look here, Hurry,” he said; ‘171! for- give you and will bot mention it to a soul if you'lt luvk me in the face and promise solemaly to be strictly houest from this time forth.’

Bailey caught his hand gratefully, and he telt his reward begin as he saw the shadow of a new hope dawning on the his troubled fuce. ‘1 so.emnly promise,’ he said, ‘ never agaia to touch a penoy’s worth that is not lawfully my own.’
