The Industrial Association of France has organized a public competition for the production of the best mask-res- pirator for the exclusion of dust. The instrument should fultill the following conditions: (1) Efficiently protect the mouth and the nose of the artisan against the absorption of dust: (2) should not be frail, but must, veverthe- less, be light and handy ; (8) should not be expensive, and should easy to clean and keep in :epair ; (4) should not heat the face. A prize is offered the respirator which best answers these re- quirements.

How Moths Multiply,

It is now a clearly defined fact that there are three distinct species of wool- destroying moths common to this coun- try. The common species are light brown in color, They begin to appear late in Apriland may occasionally be seen about iate as August.

They pair off, and the female then searches for suitable places for the dis position of her eggs, working her way into dark corners, crevices of the walls, cracks in the floor, or deep into the folds of the garments, apparently choosing by instinct the least conspicuous place.

The moth lays from eighteen to one hundred and forty eggs at a time. From these eggs hatch, in a period of three to seven days, the white, soft, lar- ve or worms, all of which begin to make acase for themselves from the fragments of the cloth upon which they feed. The worm reaches its full growth in thirty-six days, and then, crawling into some yet more protected spot, remains torpid during the winter within its case, which by this time is thickened and fas- tened at either end and is the full-sized cocoon.

A Place of Roses.

Kezanlik is beyond all dispute the sweetest smelling piace on earth. I¢ lies on the upper Tundja, near the foot of the Shipka pass, in a valley full of rose fields. Kezanlik is the chief seat of the industry in attar of rosea. It takes 20,000 of the roses that grow in that val ley to yield, by distillation, as much genuine attar or otto of roses as equals in weight a 50-cent piece.
