$15,000,000. The figures may be somewhat too high, and they may be too low, but Iam satisfied that they
cannot be more than $2,000,000 or $3.,- 000,000 oat of the way. Mr. Scheli| came honestly into possession of every | dollar of his property, and that is more| than car be said of many of the rich| meonof the country. He was one of} the most scrupulous and rigidly con-} scientious gentlemen I have ever met. ; Possessed of genuine abilities and a special aptitude for business, his wonder- ful success in life was not surprising. ‘When Buchanan was elected, he ap- pointed Mr. Schell collector of New| York. From that eventful period | (twenty-seven years ago) may be dated the beginning of Mr. Schell’s financial prosperity. His wealth began to ac- camulate. When he entered ‘he office of collector he was probably worth about $10,900 or less. The prominent public position and influence which the collectorship carried with it, and the business reputation and knowledge of public affairs to which he speedily: at- tained, aforded the opportunies, and Sesides, the era of railroads was begin- ning just then. About that time a number of new roads were projected, while others were building, and the field of legitimate investment ‘was on- rivaled. The first great railroad was completed about 1853. Others were progressing, and capital wasin great demand. Thus Mr. Schell, almost at the outset of his investments, had all the advantages attending these great works, and had no obstacle to the ac- cumulation of a large fortune. Indeed, [ might say, that the same observation applies to a majority of our present millionaires. Nearly ali the vast wealth they possess — hundreds of millions-of doltars, and far ~beyond thé Wildest dreams of European natidéns, bas been harvested within the last twenty- seven years by the exercise of a bigh order of business tact,sagacity and fore- sight in making investments. Gould, too, has made his pile, all of it within twenty years, Huntington, during the the same period ; Vanderbilt, certainly Within a quarter of a century ; Russell Sage and W, B. Ogden also; in tact you might take the last quarter trom 1850 up and it would not be inappro- priate to call it the golden age of in- vestment. We shall probably never see such opportunities again.
