Orrawa, July 18.

Private despatches from Victoria says the reports of the smallpox epidemic sre greatly exaggersted through the medium of the Vancouver press. There have been seven deaths so far and 56 cases. All are under the quarantine.

Cause of Premier Robson's Death.

Lonpon, July 18.

It now appears that the death of Premier Robson, of British Columbia, whose body has been sent home, was the result of an accident. While driving in London in a hansom, the door was violently closed upon his little finger, crushing it to pulp, Mr. Robson neglected to have the finger pro- perly attended to and blood poisoning set- ting in, death took place in less than a week.

Lonpon, July 18. At the rifle shooting at Bisley on Saturday, the contest for Elcho Shield was won by Scotland, scoring 1,696; England second, with 1,692; Ireland third, with 1,665 points. In tke shooting tor the Kolapore Cup the scores were: England, 684 points; Canada, 662 points; Guernsey, 659 points; Jersey, 658 points. Accident on the I. C. R. Hairax, July 18. Atrain on the I. C. R. broke in three sections near Shubenacadie yesterday. Con- ductor Christie had one of his legs so badly crushed that he died a few hours later.

Port Hawkesbury, C. B., July 15.— Captain J. W, Lawlor, the renowned voy- ager, in bis 12 foot canvas boat, the Craw- ford Shoe, arrived this morning en route for Newfoundland, where he will take his final departure for Queenstown, lreland, abvut the 25th. Sr. Prrerssurc, July 15.—Owing to reports that doctors were causing cholera patients to be buried alive, the lower classes of Saraloff rose in revolt on the 10th inst., and wrecked and plundered the police sta- tion, cholera bospital and residences of chief of police and physicians. Two medi- cal assistants were killed, The mob re- sisted the soldiere who were summoned, and the latter fired, killing three rioters. Bermopa, July 15.—Bermudians have responded liberally to the appeal for as- sistance for the St. John’s sufferers. Money aud clothing were seut by the Alpha, which left to-day. Thirty cases of clothing went freight free. Expect to seud substantial remittance later; still col-

lecting. Hope to send more packages next steamer.

Monrreal, July 15.—Almost $30,000 have been subscribed here for the St.

John’s fire sufferers. A despstch was re- ceived to-day from J. J. Cole, president of the St. John’s relief committee, stating that pecuniary aid was most needed. The citizens’ committee of Montreal do jot wish to send the money down as there is a possibitity of its being applied to purposes other than are contemplated by the com- mittee. Another objection is that this meney may be used to erect shanties on the property where the people lived and that the landlords will charge the poor cottagers rent on these shanties.

Lonpoy, July 15.—The Queen has donated £50 to the Lord Mayor's fund for the sufferers of St. Juhn’s, Nfld.

MontreaL, July 15.—Lord Mount- ; Stephen has cabled one hundred dollars to the relief fund of St. John’s.

Toronvo, Ont., July 15.—The millers of the country, to whom a@ special appeal on behalf of the Newfoundland sufferers has been made, are responding in a ready and generous fashion. About 250 barrels of flour have so far been contributed. The first carload is to be shipped to-day.

MontreAL, July 15.- The Provincial Secre- tary of British Columbia hes telegraphed to the Provincial Board of Health here to the effect that there are 48 cases of smallpox in Victoria, 5 in Vancouver, and | in New West minster, There is none elsewhere as far as is known, and all cases are under the supers vision of the authorities. Health officers here say that they have no fear of infection.
