FrxMoy, Sept. 26. Gr. Tanner, Irish Nationalist member of Parliament, in response to the demand of the court, made a speech to-day from the balcony of the hotel. He denounced the action of the police at Mitchellstown, and the treatment of editor O’Brien. The police charged the crowd, who returned the charge with stones. Many policemen re- ceived severe injuries. The police used their batons, injuring 14 persons, nearly all of whom were conveyed to the hospital.

(JUEBEC, Sept. 24.

Yesterday four little children belonging to P. Gadbout living, close to the camp- ing grounds where the Dominion Artillery Association held its annual competition a few weeks, ago went out to pick up pteces o- exploded shells. While engaged in th's they came across a large shell which had undoubtedly not exploded. They at once set to work to dissect the fuse, and applied a lighted match to it, the result being that the shell exploded, killing three of the children instantly and injuring the fourth

so seriously that its life is despaired of. The mother has been unconscious ever since hearing of the accident, and her

recovery is doubtful.

Killed on the Track.

Moncron, N. B., Sept. 24.

This morning, a little before five o'clock, Isaac Clark discovered at Church Street railway crossing the horribly mangled re- mains of a woman. It was apparent from the diposition of the remains that the woman had been killed by the incoming morning express, and the body run over again and still further mutilated by the out- going express. The remains were at length identified as those of Eliza Bailey, a woman well known about town. It is believed she laid on the track and fell asleep.

Mr. O'Meara, who some time since resigned his charge as Rector of St. Paul's,

His text was the 24th verse of the 20th chapter of the Acts of the Apostles. ‘‘But none of these things move me, neither count i my life dear to myself,so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry which I have received of the Lord Jesas, to testify the gospe! of the grace of God.” From this text the reverend gentleman preached a power- ful and very affecting discourse. in reviewing his ministry, first as Curate and latterly as Rector of St. Paul's Church, he spoke of the unmoving kindness and truly Christian spirit, manifested towards him by Dr. Fitzgerald, who always received him as a brother in the Lord. Cholera at New York.

New York, Sept. 25. The cholera stricken steamer Alesca is still swinging at an anchor off lower quaran- tine. Two passengers died last evening and twenty-three passengers are six at New York.

Big Loss by Fire.

Toronto, Sept. 25. The loss by fire at the village of Craven- hurst Friday will exceed half a million dollars. Over $2500 is already subscribed towards the relief of those rendered home- less.

Fishery Notes.

Last week's fishing was rather unsuccess- ful. Only a few barrels of mackerel were caught by seine. Fishermen say that sein- ing is over for this season. With the hook and line however, some of the largest and best mackerel ever caught on this coast have been taken within the last few days. All agree that there is any quantity of mackere) but they are hard to catch.

About thirty sail came into Svuris harboT for shelter on Saturday. Among the number there were only two American seiners. It is said that there are only a very few of the latter now in the Bay. Cruisers Acadia, Critic and Advance were there among the fleet. H. M.S. Canada also gave the port of Souris a call the same day.

Schooner Samuel Drake caught sixteen barrels mackerel Friday off East Point with hook and line. While the fish were biting fast, a school suddenly showed up. The crew sprang into the buat, set the seine, but missed the mackerel. The cook, the only one left on board, sept on fishing, and by the time his companions had got on board again had caught overa barrel of No. 1's.

The Loraine, Capt. Tierney, Souris, caught 18 barrels mackerel with the hook and line last week off East Point.

At Naragansett Park, Providence, R. I., on the 22nd inst., J. B. Barnaby sent his double team, Captain and Ernest Maltravers, a fast mile to beat 2.33}, for a cup valued at $100, offered by the Society for the Encouragement of Domestic Industry. The wagon with Barnaby weighed over 400 pounds. ‘Time, 2.26, the best mile for double team ever made on Narangansett track.
