Mr. J. A. Woodburi‘i, of SLJohn, N. , 11., spent a few days in the early part of the week in Bummersidc, soliciting orders for a rtabla lire enginecailcd L'Extincteur. He lizd one of the smallest size with him as a specimen. It holds about twelve pints of water, and appears more like a toy than a serviceable fire engine. At the request of some of the townspeople Mr. Woodburn con- sented on Monday evening to make atrial of the efi‘ectiveness of this engine. A pile, composed of three large tar barrels and a lot of shavings, was erected on the engine house equnro. This was set an tire and nliowedio burn for some time. The tai- barrels burned very fiercely, and the flames could not have been less than ten feet high. To attempt to cxtln uisli so considerable a fire with the liqui contained in miengine not much larger than a good sized coffee pot seemed an utter absurdity. Mr. Woodbiirii, however, set to work and he had not directed the thin jet upon.the.flre for two minutes before the whole was a black mass. The affect was almost magical. .li‘roni what we saw we are thorough- ly.convinced that the L'Extlneteur is a must efliclentflre extinguisher. There is no de- ception about it. .It can do all that those in- terested in selling it declare it capable of doing. Every owner of property, particularly inplaccs like this where water is scarce and thatncans of extinguishing flres scanty,should procure one of these portable engines with as litile.dcliiy as possible .

TIIE CALEDONIAN CLUB.

Tue Eiftii Annual Gathering of the “ Cale- donhin Club," came all on Wednesday last, on a beautiful llcld on Government. Fa rm kindly set apart for the occasion by llis Ex- cellencoy the Licut. Governor. The diwwas delightfully line, and II large number of per- sons fromtha neighbouring Provinces and all ,parts of the Island, were on the ground to witness the different performances. The .Club assembled in the morning at Mason Hail, Water Street, where they were joined by the officers of the Benevolent Irish Society ot‘this city—from whence they marched in procession to the Gi'ouiids,,witli the Bagpipes playing and the Bannersof the two Societies floating in the breeze .

At two o’clock. the four Town Companies of Volunteers, and two or three Volunteer Companies from the Country, the whole under the command of Major Beer, were reviewed by Colonel the lion. J. 11. Grey, and plit .through various military evolutions. The Llub suspended their Games while the troops were being reviewed.

The proceeds of the day are to be given to the “ Wallace Monument b‘und" Competitors only allowed one chance. Competitors for role Vaulting, and also the lligli Leap were at a great disadvantage on account of the an- even surface of the ground. Migllugh Mc- Donald of Georgetown and Mr. Patterson of Halifax, we understand, very generously don- ated their prizes to the " Wallace Monument Fund."——lsluitdtr.
