FACTS AND FIGURES WHICM HAVE SUR.

Among the torrents of abuse with which our Continental press critics, with one or twe exceptions, have de- luged us since the beginning of the war, there has been discernible one element of inuolvntary admiration —grudging and deprecatory, perhaps, but still admiration.

[It is not our fighting qualities that ave extracted this faint praise; not the bravery of our troops, nor the bril- liant tactics of any of our generals, The fact that has commended itself with most force to our neighbours on the Continent is that since October last we have transported to South Africa, with scarcely the loss of a single life, 200,000 men, thousands of horses and mules, hundreds of guns, and many thousands of tons of munitions, and all this without putting any undue pressure on our transport service or dangerous drain on our supplies, and with comparatively few hitches.

This is what has most impressed the foreigner who is_ sufficiently versed in the subject to have even a_ rough idea of what has been done—and few for- eigners have more. After all, the for- eigner can hardly be blamed if his knowledge extends no further than a rough idea, for even Englishmen, in- terested heart and soul in every detail of the war, find it difficult to learn much of the actual facts connected with the tremendous task of landing aud supplying an army of 2e0,000 men

,in a country seven thousand miles dis-

tant from our shores.

THE OFFICIAL FIGURES

The following figures and informa- tion derived from official sources will serve to show the magnitude of the task with which our transport and commissariat departments have had to cope. First of all we give the totals of men, horses, guns, and waggons sent from England since the despatch of the first detacament of the army corps on Oct 20 last.

This table shows that in the first 227°

days since October 20 (including Sun- days) 234 transports have lett Eng!and for South Africa—rougtly speaking, one per day—each carrying on an average about 800 troops and 150 horses, besides guns and vehicles.

THE HOSPITAL ARMY.

These figures, striking as they are, by

no means exhaust the statistics relat-

ing to the transport, for, besides the

men, horse, mules, guns, and vehicles detaildd above, there have been sent out 11 general hospitals, five stationary and 27 field hospitals, and 18 bearer companies, for the care of the wound- ed. These have been manned by 470 military and 360 civilian doctors and surgeons, 520 nurses, 3,500 Royol Army Medical Corps, 500 volunteers, 1,200 St. John Ambulance Corps. and 130 militia ambulence corps, all of whom, not to mention the personnel of the severals large private hospitals, have been earried from England. Two hespital trains and four hospitals ships have sent from England, and others have been made up at the Cape. The weight of a general hospital and equipmen.s, it may be added, is 412 tons, and of a stationary hespital 80 to 100 tens, se that the necessary ship space for this branch of the army’s requirements is no smal! matter.

F@CD AND MUNITIONS OF WAR,

With regard to shipments of ammv- nition, foeds, and general munitions of war, the only figures available are those giving the tonnage engaged in various ships. From October 5, 1899, to April 28 1900, 793,774 tons were en- gaged in 292 ships. This vast quan- tity of material was allsent eut from England, and consignments are stil! gning eut day by day in the same pro portion.

To this amount we have tofadd 130,- ooo tons of Oats, meat, hay, coal, etc., which have been despatched from various ports in the United Kingdom, the colonies, and abroad,

To deal with the postal and telegra- phic work §79 telegraphists and 3,500 post office men have been shipped to South Africa. The mails to that part of the world have needless to say been very largely increased, and on May 19

ARMY CORPS OF SICK AND WOUNDED.

Finally, to complete the work of the transports, 536 officers and 10,807 non- commissioned officers and men_ have been brought back to England as_ in- valids up to the end of May.

Truly, in spite of the faults which

were committed at rhe outset of the campaign, this is a work of which we may well be proud; there can be no doubt that it has done at least as

much as our feats of arms in the field

to uphold our prestige and exhibit our

power to foreign rivals and critics. FROM GREATER BRITAIN,

In addition to this great army, troops have been sent from Australia, Canada, India, and small contingents from other colonies, and reliefs from Malta, Crete, Egypt, etc —in all, a total of about 20,000, which makes the grand total of fighting men landed in South Africa well over 200,000.

To the total of 36,000 horses sent from England must be added other 34,000 remounts from Australia, Ar- gentina, and New Orleans, and about 10,000 which went with the colonial contingents, Of mules, over 75,000 have been despatched from New Orleans, and Mediterranean, Indian, and other ports. Thus we arrive at a total of over 150,000 animals.

The average cost of these horses and mules (i.e., of those bought abroad for remounts) is estimated at £15 and £12 apiece, respectively. As to the cost of transporting the men from England to South Africa, no exact figures are obtainable, but it may be stated that one of the transports receiv- ed £7,000 for its charter, and 1s. 6d. per head per day for all the troops it carried. On this basis an approxi- mate total sum may be easily arrived at—viz., about 4 14,000,000 sterling.
