END NEAR An operational squadron of 12 Banshees at nearby Shearwater naval air station is to be “paid off” about the end of this year, Admiral Rayner said. Their pilots would be able to find flying duty with various other types of aircraft in five other squadrons in this area or with small reserve squadrons in Victoria, B.C. and Toronto or a small tracker and _ helicopter Squadron on the west coast. The Banshee was the only Canadian aircraft equipped to carry the deadly sidewinder missile. The new frigates are to carry a similar type of guided missile.

! Whether Canada became in- volved in a conventional “‘brush- fire’ war or full-scale nuclear , the navy is ready defen- sively, Admiral Rayner said. Defence Minister Harkness announced in the Commons Wednesday the new frigates and submarines would be built, but he did not give an estimate of the cast.

Admiral Rayner told the press conference that Canada’s fight- ing forces function basically in a defensive rather than an fensive capacity and are pledged in this capacity to NATO.
