Resolved, That the app'ication of Mr. E. Gillis, transmitted by the Presbytery of Wallace, be granted; and that the action ot the Synod be reported tothe General Assembly, and that Mr, Gillis be required to take such a ‘ditional classes in Dalhousie College as the Senate of the Theological

Hall may deem expedient.

Rey. John Morton, Missionary to the eoolies of Trinidad, at present home with his family on account of tho ill-health of his wife, addressed the Synod. He spoke on the work in connection with the Trini- dad Mission.

SUPREME COURI—SUMMERSIDE. W vpxvespay, Oct. 3. Catherine Ryan versus Johnson Lawson. —The Jury retired to consider this case in Tuesday evening, and, after some hours deliberation, returned a verdict for the dlaintiff, and assessed the damages at $65.00. The first suit called on Wednesday was ‘Stephen Wright vs. John Green and ‘thers.’ In this case the question of a public highway through certain land in Summerside was in dispute. The Court was engaged on this case until five o’clock, and it resulted in the plaintiff being non- sulted. An interesting incident occurred in Court yesterday. When the Hon. J. Longworth, Q. C., began to address the Jury in a suit on a promissory no'e, the Jury rose and remained standing until Mr. Longworth courteously requested them to be seated. {t was universally regarded as a mos! striking tribute, involuntarily paid, to dig- nity and courtesy.

Lorang Perry v. P. E. I. Steam Naviga- tion Company.—The hearing of this case which has been for so many years before the Court, was brought on again for the fifth time to-day. After the plaintiff had been examined, the counsel suggested to the Court that if an adjournment were granted, a settlement, in all probability. would be arrived at. After the adjourn- ment the plaintiff’s counsel stated that the suit had been settled. The terms of the settlement were not stated, and we have not heard what they are. Hodgson for plaintiff; Palmer & McLeod for defendant.

Elizabeth McFadyen v. Angus McFadyen. ~This is an action of slander, fo’ words imputing evil conduct to the plaintiff. The defence is a double one: that the de- fendant did not speak them, and also that they are true. The details of the case, which is still proceeding, are quite unfit for publication. Kelly for plaintiff; Howe and C. Palmer for defendant.

DEAD IN EACH OTHERS’ ARMS,

Abner James was an undertaker in Z1n- esville, his office being on Ninth street. } {le and his wife did not live happily tos gether, although they had been married but fourteen months. Recently business troubles have added to the unhappiness of the couple, and a separation was looked for. Yesterday their disagreement reach ed a climax, and Mrs. James left home, vowing she wuld not live with James again. She started for the residence of her mother, Mrs. Lacock, a widow, about eight miles from the city, and was foliow- ed by her husband. They left the city tos gether in the same trainon the C. and M. V. Railroad. They got off at Delearbe and started to walk together to Mrs. L cocks. When last seen alive they were walking together and apparently in an excited con- dition. They were walking up the lane ieading from the public road towards the house, but they never reached there. This moraing about eight o'clock the bodies of both were found lying in a fence corner, about 300 ysrds from the house. The husband had a bullet hole in his breast,and the wife one in the temple and ancther in the region of the heart. [hey were tightly locked in each other's arms, and in the left hand of the wife, held as in a vice, wasa revoiver, with which it is supposed the dreadful deed wasdone. How they came to their death is ia a measure, a mys ary, as no one saw the fearful tragedy enact- ed. The supposition, is however, that the wife first shot the husband, and then put ihe two bulletsinto her own body before

An application was made to the Council by Mr. J. D. Mason for a street lamp at the corner of Richmond and Rotchford streets. Councillor Harris stated that the main pipes of the Gas Uo. did not extend to that point, and that therefore a gas- lamp could not be placed there, except at considerable expense, and suggested that a kerosene lamp be placed there, as an eX. periment. On motion of Councillor Heartz, it was

7 The Committee appointed to report up« on the advisability of erecting a Windmill at Spring Park, reported as follows :—

Your Committee appointed to take into consideration the advisability of putting up a wind-mill, pump and tank, at the Spring in Spring Park, beg to report that they coasider it necessary, and do suggest that the work be commenced at once; capacity of tank to be not less than 8000 gallons, with pump of sufficient size.

On motion of Councillor Harris that the report be adopted, Councillor Crabbe said the he would like to see the way clear for paying for this improvement, before sup- porting any motion for its erection. Councillor Byrne thought it would be bet- ter to defer the further consideration of the motion until next meeting of Council, and brought in a motion to that effect. Councillor Harris could not eee how it was that members of the Council could rush a Bill in one night, authorizing the engage. ment of six or seven additional policemen, involving an expenditure of some two or three thousand dollars, while a matter of vital necessty to the citizens, and which only involved the expenditure of a small amount, was deferred from night to night. He, therefore, pressed his motion for ad. option of the report. The amendment to the motion being then put, was carried.

The City Surveyor furnished a memo- randa of the amount of planking delivered to different parties in the city.

Bills to the amount of $300, on account of the Fire Department, were ordered to be paid, and a “sum sufficient” for the purchase of the quantity of Hose required for the use of *‘ Rollo” engine was granted. A further sum of $200 was granted for the proper equipment of the newly.,organs jzed ‘** Ch’town Salvage Corps.”’

The following letter from Dr. McLeod, was read by the Mayor :—~

To His Worship the Mayor and Common Council of Charlottetown :

GENTLEMEN,—I beg to submit the follows ing statement for your consideration :-— Typhoid fever is now epidemic in Char- lottetown. The poorer classes of the peo- ple drink, and use for culinary purposes, the water from the town wells. ‘I'he water from almost, if not all of these wells, is unfit for such purposes ordinarily. But when the fecal matter of typhoid fever patients is deposited in water-closets near those wells, and when from the porous nature of the soil, it finds easy access into the wells the water becomes positively poisonous; and, consequently, a direct vehicle of this djeage, The water-closets, moreover, into which the exerement of typhoid fever patients is emptied, com- municate the disease directly to parties who enterthem. In the absence of an abundant supply of pure water I| think something could be done to leseen the

evil. Either the watersclosete op the wells should be closed, The former, in my opin-

ion, could be made more pure by placing them on the surface ground—without any pits being dug—and by the daily and free use of coaleashes, earth, etc., as disinfect- ants; thus rendering them dry-closet:, By this means the wells also would be much less polluted. In my practice I try to enforce on my patients the necessity of using Spring Park water, as the purest at~ tainable, but find in many quarters a pre- judice against it, the parties suspecting ‘that the watermen sell an adulterated article. Qa enquiry they informed me that some at least of the watermen haye been seen filling their carts from town wells. I would, therefore, must respectiully sug- gest that your Council take steps to secure a larger supply of Spring Park water, and also that your Board of Health cause it to be more publicly and more generally understood that parties drinking the well water are running an imminent risk of contracting a very serious, if not a fatal, disease.

Councillor Heartz would not, by any means, support a motion to the above effect, Councillor Byrne would not support the motion. His reasons for bringing in the motion at last meeting for increasing the sal- saries of the City Clerk and Stipeadiary Mag~ istrate was that he saw the above officials were hard worked, and that he was shown that the salary of the other Civie officials would be curtailed, If he knew that the salaries of other officials were to be in- creased in a like manner, he would be in- clined to alter his former motion,

The Mayor—in calling attention to the large expense of the staff of the City offix cials—brought to the attention of the Council that with the better system adopt- ed in the City Clerk's office, and for other reasons as stated the offices of City Collector, City Engineer, Treasurer, and Inspector of Bread could be dis pensed with, The salaries of theses offi« cials are $500, $500, $200 and $41.60— making a saving to the city of $1,241.60 perannum. The motion was then put and carried,
