sides at Houston, reports the death, at San Buena, Ventura, Mexico, of Dr. D. McLean, a native of this Province. Dr. McLean was formerly, and for a long time connected with the United States army as Assistant surgeon, in the Mississippi. On leaving the army he went to San Buena, where he passed away as stated.

Arrival of Passengers.

JUDGE ALLEY LAYS DOWN THE LAW,

Haurrax, N. S., July 13. The steamer City of St. John arrived at 10 o'clock yesterday morning with fifty eight passengers, mostly women, from the wrecked steamer Merrimack, who were brought from Liverpool. The rest, about thirty men, arrived at Liverpool yesterday,

The story that Pilot Reynolds, of the Merrimack had stated that the steamer’s compass was out of order is confirmed.

The conduct of the crew and some of the

othcers after the men landed on the Island is described as disgraceful and outrageous. They obtained large quantities of liquor

and became very drunk in which condition they created a perfect uproar.

On Monday, it is alleged, the quarter- master went off to the steamer and return-

he demanded that the passengers should pay twenty-five dollars. Judge Alley, a passenger, declared that he objected to the | payment of the money, and told the quar- |} ter master that he dare not take it. The man frightened at the tone of Judge Alley | handed over the baggage without insisting on being paid. One trunk landed had been cleaned out completely of its contents. Supposed to have been done by plunderers.

The Merrimac was insured principally in English offices for nearly her entire value.

The Sultan persists in his refusal to sign the convention with England with refer- ence to Egypt in its present form, not- withstanding it is urgently advised to ratify it by both Germany and Italy.

The Canadian Pacific has brought itself into sudden conspicuousness as one of the chief routes of the globe by its transporta- tion of a cargo of Japan tea. The tea has arrived in London on the thirty-first day after leaving Yokohama, having traversed of longitude. No previous shipment over any other route has proached this despatch. At this rate, when the Russian railroad in Central completed, Jules Verne’s fancy of a circuit of the world in eighty days may come to seem very slow and old-fashioned travelling. Whatever may be the truth about the con- dition of the Pacitic port of the Canadian road in winter, it is evident that in sum- mer it is likely to take a very large share of the traffic between Europe and the East.
