Steel Works Closed. ENFORCED IDLENESS FOR HUNDREDS OF MEN OF PENNSYLVANIA.

The steel rai! mill of the Bethlehem Iron Company at Bethlehem, Pa., was shut down down on Wednesday morning, throwing 284 men, exclusive of leaders, out of work. On Thursday the entire Bessemer mil! was closed, throwing 630 additional men into enforced idleness The mill will reman idle for a long period. The cause is lack of orders for steel rails,

TherGarnegie Company's Edgar Thompson steel works shut down last Friday and began to make billets.

The Pennsylvania Steel Company is working ov less than half time. Oaly one of the Lacke awanna mills is working. The Catasauqua Manufacturing Company has shut down one of its Pullerten mills, making idle 150 men,

The Thoms Iron Company has stopped its blast farnaces in the vicinity of Bethiehem, and where mills sre working they are pr. czed ing on time which is only next door to & eom- plete cessation.

The enforced idleness of. 1,000 men lends a blue aspect to the town and business The stop will not effect the Merchant mill nor the ordnance works, where gun and armor plate making will continue uninterrupted,

R. P.° Linderman, the president of the works, said in av interview: *‘We sincerely regret the shut down at thia time, but it was impossible for us to get work, and there was nothing to do but clese We will make every effort to get orders and will start up just as soon as we possibly can .
