GOV'T DECIDES To QUIT ‘ ROLE or SUGAR DADDY

OTTAWA (CPI—The gov- ernment has decided to quit its role as a sort of ‘sugar daddy‘ to about 200 girls in the capital.

It has told them to pack their bags and move out of Laurentian Terrace Hostel by Oct. 1. The place is being

closed.

The hostel has lost money for the last five years. and the taxpayers have been foot- ing the deficit. The 1963 loss was and one of $80.- 000 is forecast this year.

Most of the girls. under 25. are junior civil servants. nurses. university students. or embassy employees.

The hostel was opened in

1942 when there was a war time shortage of accommoda tion for a rapidly - growin, civil service. Since then may. than 10.000 girls have stayed

there.

In 1962 the Glassco roya. commissmn on governmen. organization said the hostel I should be closed.

Since 1958 the girls have been paying $69.50 for a sin- :Ie room and $55.30 for a dou~ blc. Both rates include meals

businessmen were rapped again Tuesday because they don't ex- port enough.

Two speakers at the annual meeting of the Canadian Manu- facturers‘ Association had some sharp words for the 1,200 deie- gates. many representing firms taking part in export programs.

. Gordon McMilien. pres ldent of Keeprite Products Ltd., of Brantford. Ont.. told the meeting there is only one way Canada's secondary industry can experience the growth it needs—by exporting.

“I think it is obvious that as yet we Canadians are doing a poor job on exporting the prod- ucts of secondary industry." he said.

“That we Will find world markets in ever-increasing pro- portions for our raw materials I have no doubt. But the pint: where 1 fear we shall falter— and falter badly—is in the pro gross and expansion of our secondary industry."
