We believe an efficient system of Sectnrian Education to be an impossibility in ii country such as ours. und in this opinion we are confirmed by the conclusion arri- ved at by an able and conscientious de- iinlninlitionnlist who litld closely thtl cure- f'ully examined the Common School Sys- tem of tile United States. The Rev. Mr. Fraser, in his excellent report. states—-

" The establishment of a rate-supported system at schools must. I think. lead by it logical and moral actually to merely secti- lar education. The ltiniutcnanrc of a “ll- iionlinatioiinl system would be impossible. when tile school he 'lline the property at rate-payers of all denominations. And. unhappily. there seems to be no middle course between a purely secular system and it purely denominational one. All ex- pedients that have been devised. all coni- pronliscs tliiltliuve been attempted, appear to me either to result. in nothing. or coll- lesscdly to break down."

\Vc have here the honest testimony of every able man. as to the feasibility of engrafting the Denominational system on the National system. in a country in which the school is the property of tax- payers of all denominations. “'0 were certainly surprised at an admission made by the editor of the Islander. Ilc says tilat—“ The endeavour to introduce into England and Scotland ll national unde- nominutionul system of education. is an endeavor which should have been made years ago. and one which. we hope. will very shortly be successful." if the editor wishes to see a national lindcnoni- inutiontil system established in Great Britain. why is he doing his utmost to overthrow the secular system which is in operation among ourselves ? There is n greatcrmr rather a more gencrulaliversity of religions opinion ill this island. than in Britain. and if the only national aya- tcm that can be set. up In Hm. country must. of necessity. be nnsccturinn in its character. how can we hope successfully to introduce the religious clement into the national system already established in this country. We. for our part. can see neither \vlsdom nor consiaicncy ill this mode of procedure. We cheerfully admit. that in the Old Country there are many good well meaning men who oppcllc the introduction of the secular system; bill. we also know that their" opposition would be completely powerless, were it not. tor the bitter hostility of bigots and tyrants to the mcartirc. this have enjoyed the advantages of a good Iystcm of national Education. The State, anyli tilc Islander, should only pay tor secular Education. It. follows then. as it matter of course. that the State should appoint .only secular teachers. That the State should undertake to pay teachers whom it. has no power either to appoint or to remove, is. in ouropinion. vcrytooiich policy indeed. Where the State pays the muster. the State should appoint. the master, and the institution which is supported by government money should be wholly under government con- trol. If the Wesleyan: and the Presby- terinns establish Denominational schools in order to give their 80!!! and their daughters a higher education than can be obtained at the primary schools. they are wise and prudent in doing so. There bodies. as they intend to control the whole management of their educational institutions. intend also to support them out of their private means. The editor of tlic Islander need not think that either the Wesleyans or the t’rcsbytcrians. for the lulke of having government aid for their schools. will ever consent to allow the public money—their money—to be expended in propagating what they be- lieve to be religious error. This is an unholy complch which conscientious ulid enliglitcntd men would scorn to make. The Islander declares that he “ would be sorry to think that Emperors and Kings should hereafter be dictated to by Ecclesiastical. as they were a few centu- ries ago." And so should we. But we are not, perhaps, so fur rcmovcd front danger of this kind its the Iii/under would have us believe. We have heard rumors of Ecclesiastical dictation being attempt- ed iii our own country and in our own day.

It has been said that some of our poli- ticiims trill be compelled to pay dearly for having ball the manliness to vote and speak on matters educational as their reason and consciences dictated. It is reported that denunciations. not loud but. deep. have in high places becn fulminu- ted against the present Government. on account of the noble stand which they have taken on the Educational question. We have heard something of politicians. from whom better things might be ex- pected. paying their court to Ecclesias- tics, and changing their tune, and even reversing their policy. iii order to secure the influence of Ciiurelimcn to aid them in furthering their ambitious schemes. indeed. ifthe truth must be told. we are strongly of opinion that Ecclesiastical in- fluence forms a very important element at this moment in our island politics. We believe. too. that this imwonted zeal which some of our politicians display iii favour oi‘rcligious Education. is nothing more nor less than a reckless bid for Ee- clesiustical support. \\'e are. however. convinced that. tile denominational move- ment is a huge blunder. and that the editor of the Islander will surely repent being engaged in it.
