But ‘ Liberal” must allow that there are equally intelli- gent people on the other side, who are evidently possessed of as much sound com- mon sense as he appears to possess. He declaims against the temperance men as being ‘‘ fanatics,” because they have made an effort on their part to suppress one of the vilest uf the vile traffic that curses this earth,

Surely ‘‘ Liberal” must be aware of the fact that the blame does not rest on the temperance men more than any other per- son, because the Act is not so thoroughly operative as it ought to be. But I contend that the whole blame rests on those who condone the traffic and are using their etforts to defend it in ifs operation, and not only they, but those higher in authority who from time to time have failed to reach a decision in the case of the Appeal from Federiction. Let ‘ Liberal,” when trying to show his hand in this matter, take the proper authorities to task, and let them have the benefit of those strictures. Then we will have a better opportunity of judg- ing of his ability to effect a still greater reform,

The following ‘‘ incident” is from the proceedings in the Court on January 7 :--

Scoville, with some impatience, abjected to any more dramatic efforts on the part of Porter, which were intended for effect on the jury, and insisted that Porter might as well read a stump-speech to the jury. He knew it had no bearing upon the case.

Porter repelled the insinuation, and in- sisted that the farce so long enacted by the counsel for the defenoe must now stop. If not rebuked by the court it would be by others.

Judge Cox ended the dispute by saying that the matter read was undoubtedly authority. Its applicability to this case could be commented on by the counsel at the proper time.

As Davidge resumed after Judge Cox’s ruling, Guiteau shouted, ‘“‘I want to get this thing right before the jury. Every one knows all about that case. The jury gave a verdict against that charge and this

rosecution knows it well.”

The effect was electrical, when Davidge, in a most deliberate and earnest manner, said: ‘*‘ Your Honor, this man was for three weeks held up to us as an embicile, and now listen to him, he not only knows the difference between right and wrong, but he understands fully the law of this case.”

Guiteau—‘‘ Transitory mania, that’s my case. I don’t pretend I’m insane now. I've got as good a head as you or Porter either. Scoville is a fool in thought, and I repudiate him and his whole theory of de- fence. All that I want is two hours before that jury. and I can set this thing all right” The scene was lively for some minutes,

Household Hinte.

LiximMent ror Spratns.—Take one ounce each of chloroform, ammonia, sweet il, and camphor gum. Mix with hali a pint of pure alcohol. Shake before using. It is a splendid liniment for family use.

Cure For Corns.— Wet common cooking soda with water, so that it will spread easily on a bit of cloth, and bind it on the corn. Keep it on till the corn is loos- ened and comes out. It is simple and sure.

FrizzLep Berr.—Brown a piece of butter the size of an egg in a saucepan, add a cup of cream or milk, one teaspoonful of flovr, mixed with a little cold milk. Have resdy a half pound of thinly shaved smoked beef, add it to the mixture, let it just come to @ boil; serve.

YEAST THAT WILL Not Sour.—Put three quarts of water and two pints loose hwpe in a pot, boil twenty minutes; put one qvart sifted flour in a pan, when hops are boiling fast strain half the hop water on the flour; work down all the lumps you can, then strain the rest boiling; add a small teacup of sugar, same of salt; when cool -nough put in yeast to rise it, Put in a sinall top jar, put where it will be waim until it begins to rise, then tie loosely and put in the cellar, or some coul place. A smal cupful is sufficient for six small loaves.
