Lonpon, Feb. 7. _ Despatches from Korti received to-day indicate a very serious state of affairs at the British position near Metemneh. Lord Wolseley telegraphs the War Office

Gubat reports Col. Boscowen, commander at that place, seriously ill, and that the Mahdi’s forces are preparing to attack the British camp. The Arabs have several heavy guns, which are being gradually moved up so as to bear on the British camp, and other field pieces are being manceuvered for the same purpose. STRENGTH OF OPPOSING FORCE.

The natives report that the Mahdi has between Berber, Shendy and Metemneh, and that the force at the latter place is daily receiving rein- forcements

Before Col. Wilson gave up the attempt to reach Khartoum, his little steamers sus- tained for four hours the fire of 7,000 rifle- men, eight Krupp guns, and eight machine guns. The Arabs showed splendid practice in handling the large guns.

No one shall harm you either coming or going.”

KHARIOUM CAPTURED BY TREACHERY.

It is stated that Khartoum was captured without the firing of a shot. Five natives who were present at the surrender of Khar- toum declare that the rebels admitted the treachery of two Pachas, who had been with Gordon. It is said the Mahdi’s troops were admitted at the main gate of the city | under the cover of darkness. The two}

natives declare that Gen. Gordon was} killed.

THE MAHDI'S THREAT.

A message has been received from El} Mahdi, stating that Gen. Gordon has become a Mussulman, and that all English officers had better follow his example. El Mahdi said he had no desire to fight the English, but unless they embraced the true faith he would not leave one in the Soudan.

THE MAHDI'S POWER.

The Mahdi is said to have 30,000 men scattered between Berber, Shendy and Metamneh. There is some hope that Gor- don may bave escaped up the White Nile.

Carno, Feb. &. WOLSELEY ORDERED TO CAPTURE BERBER.

Orders have been received from the War Office, in the Soudan, for Lord Wolseley to capture Berber at all hazards, and make of it a permanent English stronghold in_ the Soudan. All attempts to recapture Khar- toum for the present, will be abandoned.

Lonpon, Feb. 8. NO MORE FIGHTING.

At a meeting of the Cabinet to-day it was decided to instruct Wolseley to ascertain, if at all possible, the fate of (jordon, if he is still alive. Wolseley is to be iustructed to terminate the campaign without further fighting. This is thought io imply a desire

ly 4 Newrounptaxp Coast BLizzard.— Telegraphic advices from the Channel and Rose Bianche, Newfoundland, report a terrific blizzard on the west coast on the 28th ult. A large number of craft, which proceeded to the fishing grounds early on that mcroing, were overtaken by the storm ‘\'wenty-three skifis are missing, and many of the survivors badly frest-vitten. One skiff in sight went down with its crew. The crews of the missing ves- sels ayvregate about 50. There are grave fears that the loss of life is heavy.

Tur friends of the higher education of women in the United States are perplexed ver the rapid falling off in the attendance at Vassar College. In 1874 there were 300 stu- lents at that institution ; now the number is considerably less. The Boston T'raveller affirms that the great reason for this decad- euce lies in the fact; ‘“‘That we are fagt out- growing the monastic form of education, snd that colleges for co-education are justly taking pre-eminence and are attracting a largely increasing propo tion of the intelli- gent young women of the day. In womens colleges alone nothing can compete with the Harvard Annex. The women here have the advantage of instruction from the Harvard professors, and the use of the college library end apparatus, with the university atmos- phere of a college tuwn apd the near prox- iwity ot Boston.
