File Now, Pay later lax Plan

plan of your friendly income. tax collector. There's also handy new

guide. being mailed to all house- holds. which should help kitchen table mathematician fill out his income tax

year without goofing.

Revenue Minister Garland un- veiled his ans-"a new ap- proach to the taxpayer“——at a press conference Wednesday.

"We think we have something here that's worth while-—a real step forward,“ he said, happily.

Perhaps the biggest step for- ward is the plan whereby tax- payers owing money can file their returns with post-dated cheques dated April 30, the pay- ment deadline.

WANT EARLIER FILING

The innovation is designed to encourage earlier filing of tax returns. In past year a flood ot early returns from people claim- ing refunds has come into Ot- tawa between mid-February and mid - March. followed by s month-long pause until a last- rriinute rii tax returns in g ' from people with moiie,\' in pay.

The guide to filling out tax re- turns is entitled “file now — here‘s how." _ its goal is to reduce the num- ber of errors made on tax re- turns and simplify the job of revenue department employees. Last year there were mistakes in one of every six tax returns.
