THE EXHIBITION QUESTION. Sin,—I was nota little surprised to vead the editorial column of the Guardian he Wespaper, & day or two since, &B article under the above heading in which the pro- eressive editor of thal paper undertakes to qualify the remarks made by Professor Robertson at one of the meetings recently held in this province, wherein the Protessor is eaid to have expressed “his great ap- } preciation of Provincial Exhibitions—they l furnish object lessons, advertise the resources of the country, and create en thusiasm among farmers,’—and added bis opinion mu hold at least one Exhibition yearly”. The learned editer of the Guardian then mag- pavimousiy says that what Professor Robertson thus stated is true, in part. How higbly pleased the Professor would be to know tbat thet great authority on agticul- ture and exbibitions had actually endorsed his rewarke, in part.

I would ask, Mr. Editor, if agr:culture and agricultural pursuits are not encour- aged vy the holding of an annual extibi- tion, where tarmers and peuple ef ail classes may meet in friendly rivalry and compete for the prizes offered, what then would @ patriotic goverument encourage ? Soppoee that even the cost to (be country would be several thousands of dollars, is there any other way in which such an ex. | penditure can be made to better advantage in the interests of the public ai large? Is not the reputation which the Island Province is now establishing abroad for first elass stock of value to the province far and away beyond the paltry sum that bas been spent by the Government for that purpose? Is it not true that the great im~ provemeat that has taken place in the agricultural industry of this Province is largely due to the exhibitions of the past years? Any person with any knowledge of the subject, and looking to the future of that industry, must see that the value of it alone cannot be measured by a few tnous- aud dollars.

That anexhibition should be * properly managed” so as to be an object lesson io those who have sufficient interests and intell gence to profit by it goes without saying. With regard, however to the man- agement of the provincial exhibitions of the past ten years, | thiok it may be fairly claimed, that it has compared very favor- ably (as smal! things may be compared with greater) with the exhibitions of any other province of Canada. Tosuch an extent has this been the case that it has called forth the most complimentary re- marke from those who have attended from abroad as well as from the press of the
