Greetings again from the ole dog house. By now. you've all had a chance to read our first article and‘think over some of the statements we made. Because of varied responses about the article, we'd like to point out that thisncolumn is not meant to be rude or malicious to the executive members of the Student Union. It is merely here to point out to them some flaws in the operationgof the SU, and to help them to find solutions to various problems that students encounter while attending university as well as the Student Union events. One last point before we get into the column; if you plan on setting a trap (Brown, Parlee, MacAleer, or MacKenzie), to find Out who we watch dogs are - it will not work. For all you know, we could be flies on the wall.

Mr. P. D. Brown, Esq., is our main topic of discussion this week. Last week we included him as

B 'ow you will read an EXClusive interview with Krhg Brown (we mean President5Brown, don't we?) which his own CIA (Chicken Bureau of Investigation) got for us after he had given it to the editor of this paper. The interview went as follows:

Q: Why are you taking a 5% cut in yOur salary this .year? ' P.D.: Everybody talks about inflation but nobody does anything about it, so I'm hoping that other administrators will either freeze or take a cut in their salaries. Others here get paid too much, how- ever, compared to other universities UPElSU is the ldwest paid, therefore one must either have the drive to do the job or must be motivated by money. Declining enrollment doesn't help either because if costs go up and enrollment goes down, the SU will only be concerned with making ends meet and not pleasing the students. in that case, our university may financially be forced to become a community college. Q: Are you taking the cutback to enhance your image? P. 0.: Not really. Well perhaps at the grass roots level. LaSt year at election time I was trying to win votes, but of course I'm not now. My main emphasis now is to become an example to the other members of the executive. For example, too much money is spent 0n»executive-honorariums, such as desk sets, port- H raits, and paintings. (Watch Dog note: The two paint- ings in Mr. Brown's office_were ripped off his fath- ers wall at home and his father is still trying to figure out where they've gone.) These things only clutter offices.,’ 1 Q: Do you need your salary to get through the l980- 3i academic year? 7 P.D.: No. I took the three free courses that came With the job this past summer. I am taking three Courses now and three next semester, so i'll have more time‘to spend at the SU office. I live at home 50 that cuts down on a lot of expenses. If I was living in residence i would need the money. it is easier'fdr an island student on council because.

they can live at home and cut down on expenses (especially paintings). During my campaign last March I bought a new campaign suit (one tweed bla- zer-blue and grey) and that's the only thing I'm

WATCH DOG COMMENT: Mr. P.D. Brown's public relations man, Mr. P.D. Brown, did do a good job of making the questions up and answering them during the interview.

a 5% cut is a good idea, even though it amounts to only $69.

Now for the other three of our “Four Saints”.

Ms. Sue Parlee, v.p. of the SU, has a clean slate this week, but Sue is beginning to show symptoms of exhaustion. Wouldn't you if you were vice-president, stand-in social committee chairperson, interviewer on the Personnel Board, and full-time student. For being so overloaded she is holding out quite well. It was understandable to see Ms. Parlee enjoying herself at the pub Friday night. After all, she deserves to have a good time like'everyone else (right Brown, MacAleer, and MacKenzie). We salute you Sue, this week anyway.

John MacAleer, known to everyone since last week as t.w., is off the hook this week as well. We do have a suggestion, which is to see a statement (brief, as we are sure it will be) on our financial standing from Student Union Activities. After all, we are sharehol- ders in the organization and we did pay our $6l student union fees. As shareholders we would like to know if we're making a profit or going in the hole. If we are making a profit we'd like to keep it up, but if we are losing money, then perhaps we as students who attend these events can do something to help. (We just want a rough idea t.w., not a full balance sheet. Don't complicate a simple ideal)

As a result of our last article in the SUN, Neil MacKenzie finally introduced himself to the rest of the executive. It took them a few days to connect the name with the face, but hopefully by the time this article is published they'll have become adjusted to seeing Neil appear from his office when his name is mentioned or when he gets a phone call. Getting down to seriousness, however, we are proud of Mr. MacKenzie. He too, like Ms. Parlee, has been involved in the long

-tedious job of interviewing with the Personnel Board.

We understand how thankless this job can be, so to you Neil and you Sue, a tip of our hats. Our suggestion to Neil this week was introduced late last year. At the time it was suggested that our radio station CIMN should have a speaker set up in the library l0unge. By this CIMN would not only be reaching residence stud- ents, but day students could also hear the “voice of the Campus”. Since as comptroller one of your respon- sibilities is ClMN, we feel that you should address the issue rather than Patrick Kelly who is busy enough as it is. Mr. MacKenzie, would you please look into the issue to see if such an idea is viable. (WATCH DOG NOTE: After our investigations, we found out that all you need is permission to use one of the computer lines which now run by the lounge, to pump ClMN into the lounge and your problem is solved.)

For a look at the Freebie Pub we'd like to say that it was a good idea as well as a good time. Again, in some instances the left hand did not know what the right hand was doing. This time the problems were nei- ther as severe nor as numerous as the last time. Who knows, by Thursday night when Finnigan plays, you may have all the wrinkles out of the system. By the way, t.w. and king, we're still waiting for the report from Ottawa. .

If any of you students have something y0u want looked into by the Watch Dog, just start talking about it. One of our watchdogs will hear about it no doubt and we'll see if we can find an answer. Until next time,
