Tur Medical ‘tall, Apothecaries Hall and Mr. C. D. Rankin’s Drug Store will hereafter be closed at nine o'clock, sharp, on all even- ings of the week. This movement should hare been made long ago We cannot see that there is any profit or pleasure in confining dispensers or clerks in a store from 7 a.m, to 10 p. m., when the business done during these hours could easily be transacted in much less time. Tur Bazar, Tea and Concert given by the ladies of the Presbyterian Church, in Ludlow Hail, Summerside, on Christmas day was very largely attended. A large number of fancy

articles were disposed of and about $250 was realized. At}itc eight oclock the Concert given by the choir began. There were eight pieces in all— oth sacred and secular— and so well were thcy rendered that one or two

had to be repeated. The first anthem ‘‘ Ob ! Praise God” and the Christmas anthem, ‘‘ The Birthday of Jesis Returneth Again” deserve special mention. The choir have vastly im proved under their present conductor, Mr. Bairnsfather.-— /’rogress. sh Sinchagllbilgiatcleaaas

good as ever; her eyesight is almost unim- paired, and her hearing is excellent. Last September, while out in the field with her grandchildren, over a quarter of a mile from the road, they, to test her eyesight, asked who passed along the road. She immediately told them. She has 51 grand-children, and betweeen 40 and 50 = great-grand-children. She is out of hed every day and apparently has a number of Merry §Christmases yet to spend,”

Tur following memorandum of the shipping business done at Montague Bridge during the season just closed has been furnished the Pioreer by sub colloctor Rowe of that port :— Daring this season of free access to thisport, 164 vessels have found their way to Montague Bridge, aggreg sting 6,890 tons, and carrying 585 men, and .anding on our wharves 552,400 feet of lumber, 227 M shingles, and 270 M laths, Also, 1,599 tons limestone, and 931 tons of coal; with boxes, bales and packages of merchandise galore. The number of bar- rels of flour landed is insignificant as compared with previous years, there has been shipped at this port 115,642 bushels potatoss, 198,067 bushels oats, and 37,185 dozen of eggs. The value of those little brittle productions of the feathered tribe amounts to $4,214. Newfoundland has taken our products to the valne of 35,307 ; the United States to the value of $12,483 ; Great Britain to the value of $39,605.”

Mr. Youman’s Concert.

Mr. Youmans, assisted by his extremely interesting class of city Juveniles, gave a concert in the Atheneum last evening. We have no hesitation ip saying that all those whe were not present missed a very great treat. Mr. Youmans’ power as a teacher of vocal music seems to be little short of magical. He had been training the little ones only about eight days ; and

nd the City Dandy’’—the latter being re- presented by Master Hubert Beer, and the former by a little Miss Wilson—was excep- tionally well done. All the picces were enthusiastically ap- plauded ; and the announcement that an entertainment of the same kind, but with an entire change of programme, would be given on Now Year's Night, was received with evident approval. There 1s no doubt

that Mr. Youmans and his youthful pupils will, on their next appearance, be greeted by a bumper house.

Lonpon, Dee. 29.

A portion of the Bridge across the Firth of Tay was blown down while the train from Edinburgh to Dundee was crossing at 7.14 on Sunday night. The gale is so strong that steamboats are unable to reach the scene of the disaster ; but several mail bags have been washed ashore four miles from the bridge; and there is no doubt that the train is in the water. The passen- gers, who are certainly all drowned are vari- ously estimated at from 170 to 300,

LATER.

The gale having moderated somewhat, the Provost of Dundee and a number of leading citizens started in the steamer to the scene of the disaster, but have not yet returned.

The excitement at Tay Bridge station is appalling. Many thousands of people are congregated awaiting definite intelligence from the accident.

Lonpon, Dec. 29.

The Afghans who attacked Gen. Roberts at Shirpur, on the 23rd inst., numbered 6,000. The ground around Shirpur is thick with corpses.

Gen. Roberts, on the 23rd inst., informed the Viceroy that on that day he succeeded after a severe engagement in defeating the Afghans, driving them from all their posi- tions around Cabul. The victery of the British is claimed te have been complete, the enemy losing heavily, while the Eng- i lish casualities are comparatively light.

Mahomed Jan is reported to have fled early in the fight and it was the intention of Generv] Roberts to take possession of nt and Cabnl on the following Gay.
