He has thoroughly cauvassed the qualities of the various mines in the province. and in the spring will visit the most promising claims in the various districts. Mr. Bel! said: *‘I think that the prospectors who have gvod claims make a great mistake in trying to work them with out capital. They do not put forward (efforts to interest the Engtish capitalists, and the general opinion in that country is that these mines have been all worked out. Indeed, the idea of British Cvulumbian ‘mineral deposits if very hazy at the most, and to secure foreign capital one would not only have to court ‘the fullest enquiry, but | put some energy in their invitations. The | small cmpanies organized and the specula- | tive prospectors do not at all give the ‘scope to this industry that it would seem to ideserve. The mines in Alaska are paying at a yield of une ounce of gold to the ton, ‘but they are in the hands of a wealthy company. In some of the inaccessible regions where gold has been discovered 1t would require at least a yield of two ounces per ton to make it paying one. | intend to make a caref.l survey and exam- ination of the principal mimes in the spring.

A pony (12 hands 2 inches) was recently matched in England to trot 15 miles in an hour. The little fellow won with 18 seconds to spare, and without making one i break in the whole journey.
