The Beaver folk know the truth of this and it governs all they do. So. whatever happens, however unexpected it may be, they usu- ally are prepared for it. When they had built the long dam across Laughing Brook up on the Great Mountain they had been looking ahead, making sure that that there

iwould be water enough for all itheir needs, for safety in getting their food supply for the winter; so deep around their food pile and above the entrance to their house that Jack Frost would not be able [to free it to the bottom and so lock inst: feed away from them or lock them in their house to starve, They had built the house .with thick walls and roof that Ithey might not be cold in winter. ;Just before the coming of Jack |Frost the winter before they had iplsstered the root with mud that [Jack Frost had frozen too hard lfor even the claws of Buster Bear ‘to tear it open should he visit lt on the ice. And now in that same house in the water they were safe from the Red Terror, the terrible pitilcss fire that was raging on the Great Mountain all around that pond because a careless Man had wanted to smoke.

They had two ponds not tar apart. Between these ran Laugh- ing Brook. They had been on the clam of the smaller upper pond when they had discovered the Red Terror coming toward them. and coming fast. Buster Bear and Flathorns the Moose came plung- ing into the Water as frightened as evcr was Peter Rabbit with Chipmunk with Shadow the Roddy Fox at his heels, or Striped Weasel hunting him,

Suddenly this pond looked too small to be safe. "Home!" cried Paddy to Mrs. Paddy and both scrambled down the dam into Laughing Brook and swam their fastest. They could hear Buster Bear and Flathorns plunging along behind them, now in the water, now on the shore.

When they reached the bigger pond in which was that house that now seemed the safest place yin all the Great World they had {Just a glimpse oi Mrs. Lightfoot lihe Deer and lier fawns and Il-Iother Bear and her yearling ‘tubs, racing for their lives- the Red Terror leaping and snapping almost at their heels. The two Beavers waited to sec no more: they dived. Swimming under water they entered through the

The way North bid amounted to bidding six spades over South's one spade. North tailed to consider that South might have responded on a four-card suit, However, as the cards lay, South should have fulfilled the contract.

West opened the club eight and dummy played low; East won and returnud a club. Declarer, winning with the pack, saw that the dia- mond finesse was vital. so he im- mediately led a diamond toward dummy. When the jack held, a count ‘of winners would have dis- closed that the contract was tn sight unless the trumps broke horribly. The correct play was to lead t0 the spade nine and ruff a heart, then to overtake the spade king, draw trumps (discarding a cllamondl, and finally to take a second diamond finesse.

South. however, seemed to "ro- lax" when the first diamond fin- esse “ ’-. He drew trumps and, sure that East would not have holdup his diamond king the first time since it would have been the setting trick, took a sec- ond diamond finesse, 0f course it worked, but when the king failed to drop on the ace. South was still one trick short of contract.

This was one of those extremely simple hands on which even good players go wrong. With the dia- mond finesse virtually proved it
