He also read a letter from Mr. Hick- sou, Secretary of the Grand Trunk Ra. lway, granting free passes over the Railway, to Delegates to the Convention at Detroit.

A discussion then followed as to the best steps to be taken, in the absence of a Cham- ber of Commerce, for the ay pointm nt of Delegates for this Island, during which dif- ferent opinions were expressed.

Ilion. Messrs. Coles, E. Palmer, and F. Breeken, Esq., spoke in favor of their ap- pointment by the Government, and the de- fraying of their expenses by the Legis!«ture, as the ome mee gy well as the Co:mmer- cial interests of the wholeColony were involved in the important question of the Convention.

Hon. Messrs. T. H. Haviland, J. C. Pope, D. Laird, B. Davies, Esq., and others, were opposed to the Government ‘have anything whateyer to do with the subject, o the grounds that the Convention was purely Commercial, and that the invitation, cman- ating from the Detroit Board of Tracie, was addressed to the respective Boards of Trade or Chambers of Commerce throughout the Coionies, and not to Governments; and also that in the other Colonies no Delegates had been appointed by Government.

3.5. Carvell, Esq., then moved the follow- ing resolution, seconded by B. Davies, Esq.: Kesouven, That in order to the earryin.s out of the foregoing Resolution, it is expedient that a Chamber of Commerce be constituted. Which was unanimously carried.

The meeting was also addressed by the Ilon. Messrs. J. Longworth, A. A. Me}onald, ot Georgetown, and F. Brecken, Charles Palmer and H. Haszard, Esqrs., and others, all of whom concurred in the necessity of taking immediate action to secure the repre- sentation of the Colony at the Convention.
