woman, who had an iron ring on her little finger. The last personage was a tall, well- made man, lying full length. The plaster distinctly shows rm folds of his girment, his tern fs, beard and hair. > +o. oe Sacririces or rue War —A Federal writer makes the following calculation :—** It is dificult to tell who makes and who loses by this war. ‘There is a vast amount of human misery occasioned by it. 1 suppose that on both sides tavse who have died from sickness and been killed in battle since the civil war commenced, amount to 2,000,000. Probably each of these dead persons has at least four persons related to him, and either dependent upon him for support or deriving comfort and consolation frum his life. Consequently the number of human beings in both sections ren- dered miserable by the deaths of the 2,000, O00, will amount ty 8,000,000. Of the two vaillions dead, at least one in four had a wife and child. There wil! therefore be left of orphans 500,000 ; widows 500,000. In other respects there are meny who have lost neither relatives nor frieud!s by this erent civil war, and y et who havesh lin the load of mis ry. Hiow much has England, France and other countries of Europe lindireetly by the war, or rather individual peor But the loss in this country—in both sections—is not | confined to those who for the dead. There is another general misery. llow many have starved in different sections? Wehave on both sides got up a debt of 4,000 millions, that has to be assamed either in total if we Ye-unite, or in parts if we eternally separate. We have added 500 millions a year to our annual taxes. ‘The neccegaries as wellas the Juxuries of life are increased one-third if not one-half. A mechanic who earns 2 dois. per day, and bas a wife and five children to sup- port, cannot purchase as much as he could with 1 dvilar before the war. Base Comparisons. — From the cartes ¢ visite, we learn the astounding fact that kings and queens are in dress and features precisely like other people. Marvellous, preternatural, as this may seem, itistrue. Wings do not grow upon the shoulders of monarchs. They are comp ed to tread like common mortals; and many of them look like very coarse and vulgar mortals, too. They have the same number of arms and legs as us plebeians ; hay, more than that, some stoop unwieldily at the shoulders, and others are unmistakably bow-legged. Yes, bow-legged. In the grand old days of Spanish etiquette, ** the Queen of Spain, had no legs;’’ but this destructive cartes de visile mania has made short work of the fictions of etiquette. Naples appears in knickerbockers. The ex- | King stands sulkily with his hands in the

ockets of 4 pair of very ill-made peg-tops. The Emperor of Austria in his scanty white | tunie looks very much lke a journeyman baker listening to the second report of Mr. Tremenlere; the bluff king of Holland has @ strong fumily likeness to Washington Irving's Peter Stuyvesant; the King of Italy is like Tony Lumpkin with a pair of enor- mous moustaches; Queen Christina closely | resembles the widow in Tristram Shandy; and the King of Prussia looks like a drill-sergeant —a similitude, perchance, not very far frou the actual truth. As for that incomparable carte of the Emperor Napolk yn the Third, in a plain frock and a shiny but, with his pretty graceful wife on his arm, his moustaches carefully twisted, and a wagyish smile on his face—whut does Ae look like? The dark and inscrutabie politician? the arch-piotter? the gloomy man of December? Not a bit of it. Hie looks like w# confident gentleman who knows @ thing or two, who is going down intu the City to doa little stroke of business, and will aiterwards buy his wile a new bonnet on Ludgate-bill, ox St. Paul’s church- | yard.
