A Great Battle

HOCKEY fans got a great charge out of the Royals-Penguins game at The Sports Arena.

It was a miserable night with rain coming down in ugly fashion. Despite this inclemenry. however, some 700 fans were at Earl Nicholson's icehuuse and not one of them came away dis- appointed. Even the Penguins‘ supporters figured it was a really worthwhile contest.

WE think that both leamsdeserve a lot of credit for the tytpo of hockey served up. Den thlan and Joe Coyle. the referees. had their easiest time thzs season as the boys stuck strictly to hockey and left the nonsense alone.

We must commend the much lwavier Royals for the fine

restraint they displayed. There never was any attempt to crush the Baby Birds with their bodies and felloWS like Ralph losey and Eustace Reeves certainly never attempted to terrify incom- lng forwards. That's not saying that they didn’t hit with author. lty but it is saying that they never turned to plain rough house tactics. On the other hand. we feared that the Old Spainers might be a bit too cockv azamst their senior opponents and start get)- tin too chippy. However, they apparently were out there under strict orders from coach ‘Bucko‘ Trainor to play hockey and forget the grandstand stuff. They never tried to put the Royalst on the spot throughout the encounter.

THE JUNIORS conid easily have emerged victors with a little more finesse around the net. But this erratic shooting cost them several goals. Royals. on the other hand. had their share of bad breaks around the net. but they made far better use of their opportunities than did the Old Spainers. .

But Penguins’ followers were not a bit disappointed. They are looking ahead to \laritime junior nlaydowns and they see III the Birds the makings of a formidable junior squad. Sure. the Birds want to do good in the Island League but their main ob- jective is that Maritime junior crown.
